the band... | ||||||||
The Bluetones formed in Hounslow in 1992 after Mark met Adam in a record shop. Together with Scott, they formed a band called The Bottlegarden. After this band split, Eds joined and The Bluetones were formed. Early rehearsals went on in the garage of the house the band shared, and a string of low-key gigs around the area attracted much interest. In 1994 the band appeared on the Fierce Panda EP 'Return to Splendour' with their song 'No.11' (later re-titled 'Bluetonic'). In the same year, a 7" was released with 'Slight Return' and 'The Fountainhead', which is now highly sought after. Chart success came in 1995 with the release of 'Are you Blue or are you Blind' and 'Bluetonic', but the band are perhaps best known for their No.2 hit 'Slight Return', released in early 1996. The debut album 'Expecting to Fly' went in at No.1 and the band were confirmed as serious players in the Britpop game. However the demise of Britpop didn't stop them, with the second album 'Return to the Last Chance Saloon' enjoying chart success and the accompanying singles, especially the anthemic 'If...' all proving popular. Problems with the record company led to the last single from that album, '4 Day Weekend' being released through the internet only, but this didn't stop the fans buying it and it was re-pressed several times. The band started the new millennium with the release of 'Keep the Home Fires Burning', the most similar of the new songs to their older style. 'Autophilia', the second release from the new album, also did well in the charts and both songs were voted top of Radio 1's Buzz Chart, Autophilia being Record of the Week on Simon Mayo's show. The much-anticipated third album, 'Science & Nature', was released on May 15th and entered the album chart at No.7. 'Mudslide', an ep ineligible for chart entry, was released in late 2000. Recording of a fourth studio album was shelved in 2001 so the band could perfect four new songs, 'After Hours', 'Persuasion', 'The Bluetones Big Score' and 'Freeze-Dried Pop' for inclusion on a singes collection featuring all the hits from 1995-2002. Although receiving little airplay, 'After Hours' entered the chart at number 26 and the video was included for selection on digital channel The Box. 'The Singles' entered the album chart at number 14. |
