We are constantly bombarded by messages that would lead one to believe that nothing ever seems to go right for our men in uniform. From stories about constant terrorism against citizens and soldiers in Iraq to overblown tales about happenings in Guantanamo Bay and Haditha, the media tends to portray our armed forces as being either inept or corrupt. Coupled with the dissent of many Americans against our government’s involvement in overseas affairs, our soldiers are not getting a fair shake.

To call into question the very honor of our troops as the media and talking heads tend to do is deplorable. They have taken the actions of a distinct minority of misguided soldiers and assumed such a mindset applies to our forces as a whole. This exaggerated stereotyping needs to be cast aside as corruption in our armed forces is truly rare. Our troops should instead be celebrated, as real heroes, never forgetting that their true impact and value is so much greater than that of the false idols – the celebrities and athletes - who our media tends to put onto pedestals with unrepentant vigor.

The valiant men and women who represent our nation have put their very lives on the line to protect America, free oppressed souls, and spread liberty and democracy throughout the world. They have willingly accepted membership in this voluntary military of ours, living and breathing the higher calling that is the American Way.

They deserve a much greater respect than that they are now getting in regards to their effectiveness. Looking at the Big Picture on the Middle Eastern front, the paths to freedom are not fraught with dead ends. Success abounds, and we should be proud of what our military has accomplished since our nation and our families were desecrated by terrorist actions some five years ago. Bringing power and respect to Afghanistan they have defiled that nation of tyranny, toppling the dastardly Taliban and planting the seeds of democracy. They continue to do the very same to Iraq, actually capturing the abusive despot Sadddam Hussein, while eliminating his regime and initiating a series of elections which bode well for that region’s future. This success continues to this day, as made evident by the recent taking of the life of al-Qaeda director al-Zarqawi.

This was and is done while our armed forces, in conjunction with other agencies, have deflected countless terrorist networks and actions both here and abroad, maintaining a semblance of peace here on the home front. Americans as a whole have gone back to their old ways, taking safety for granted and putting terrorism to the backs of their minds. This speaks volumes of the effectiveness of not only the war on terror but the never-ending fight to make the entire world a better place to live.

Many Americans realize this and seem to support the soldiers’ efforts despite the media rants. But, realize support is so much greater than just a passing fancy, so much deeper than a holiday or ribbon sticker placed upon someone’s vehicle. True respect should be a mindset that resides within every American, one that holds our warriors near and dear, initiating a daily reflection of their accomplishments and their unfortunate sacrifices of body, mind, and life.

Always remember, America is so much better because of who our soldiers are, and if it weren’t for them, the very world itself would be a shambles.
