It seems we have been wary of actual talent existing in talent pools; where impact comes from their sheer number, not necessarily individual talent. His performances in television shows like Esperanza and Maalaala Mo Kaya have been given the critics' nod, albeit, reluctantly.
But, Marvin has been patient and using his breaks. The former Gimik mainstay now has a show of his own (Labs Ko Si Babes) and a soap drama (Rave) directed by the acclaimed Jerry Sineneng in the works. In the telenovela, Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako, he breaks away from his formula tandem and experiments chemistry with Kristine Hermosa. And soon, what could be his biggest break, as part of a tour de force cast that include Johnny Delgado, Hilda Koronel, Edu Manzano, Dina Bonnevie, Cherry Pie Picache and Joel Torre for laurice Guillen's comeback film, Tanging Yaman.
Without the glitzy package of a Star Circle talent, without the buzz and the spin doctors surrounding him, Marvin Agustin - stripped down to the bare essentials - could still work, and the harshest critics might just give him the unbiased once-over. Not that it didn't work, but because it has already worked and the serious actor is starting to emerge from this matinee star.
