The alto saxophone in Eb has been a standard-bearer of the saxophone world. Its sound is versatile for classical concerts, and has been a mainstay of the jazz world for many years.
I own two that I perform on regularly--
The curved ('normal'?) alto is a Mark VI Selmer -- good clean sound, I tend to use a jazz mouthpiece for most of my work-- A Van Doren A95, with (God-forbid!) a BARI plastic reed (soft). I find this combination will allow me to do most everything I need .
The Straight Alto ('Stritch') is by Keilwirth , and is a fantastic horn, the unusual shape and timbre (much more sharp and penetrating), gives more presence when I use it in a section, or for solos.
I will upload a pic and sound file shortly!
