James Wiley Bailey, Jr.

BAILEY
James W. BAILEY, Jr., 3216 W. Esplanade Ave, #276, Metairie, LA 70002, phone: 504-669-8650, is researching the BAILEY family of Choctaw County, Mississippi who migrated from South Carolina. Mr. Bailey is searching for all information about EDWARD BAILEY, JOSEPH D. BAILEY, URIAH BAILEY, JOHN BAILEY, JAMES BAILEY and WILLIAM BAILEY, all of whom moved in the early 1830's from the Laurens County Abbeville County area to Lowndes County, Mississippi. Mr. Bailey's father is James W. BAILEY, the son of Luther E. BAILEY, born 30 June 1907 and died 31 December 1987. Luther was married to Mary Lou SHEPPEARD born 16 September 1911 and died 25 March 1989. Both are buried at Reed's Chapel in Webster County. Mr. Bailey's great grandfather was James E. BAILEY born 12 August 1878 and died 11 February 1959. James was married to Florence AINSWORTH was born 27 January 1881 and died 13 September 1951. They are also buried at Reed's Chapel. Mr. Bailey's great-great grandfather was John R. BAILEY, born 22 April 1843 and died 15 July 1890. John's wife was Mary Elizabeth INGE born 14 December 1842 and died 22 March 1892. They are buried at Sarepta Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Montgomery County. The father of John R. BAILEY was William R. BAILEY, born 20 September 1810 and died 15 May 1876 and was married to Celia L. E. C. PEEBLES who was born 28 May 1821 and died 1 February 1892. William and Celia are buried in the Old Peebles Family Cemetery in Webster County. Also buried in this cemetery is Alpha PEEBLES, one of the early settlers of Choctaw County. Mr. Bailey said that he has an extensive collection of black and white photographs of many of the headstones from the Old Peebles Family Cemetery that were taken at a cemetery cleaning that took place in 1983. It is thought that William R. BAILEY was born in Abbeville County or Lauren County, SC. Mr. Bailey tends to believe that the father of William was Edward BAILEY, who appears with William R. BAILEY on the 1840 Choctaw County Census. He has detailed census, marriage and death records regarding the BAILEY line. Mr. Bailey is also extremely interested in acquiring copies of any documents, pictures, war records or any information whatsoever regarding the 30th Mississippi Infantry Company C, Choctaw Planters, that his great-great grandfather, John R. BAILEY, served in. He will pay for any copying expenses incurred and will share all information that he has collected on the BAILEY line. Mr. Bailey states that anyone with information may call him at the number given at the beginning of the query, leave a brief message on his voice mail, and he will gladly call you back at his expense.

Peterson
Seeking info on origins / family of MARY PETERSON, apparently same person as POLLY PETERSON, widow of Son of WILLIAM PETERSON who was in Laurens County, SC according to 1800 census. Further details follow: I am a descendant of John Peterson, b. 6/20/1801 in SC son of Mary Peterson born about 1775, apparently in SC. Mary Peterson obtained land patents in Alabama as follows: 3/3/1827 obtained land patent in Greene County. 5/15/1827 obtained second land patent for 78 acres in same area and a third patent for 80 acres fifteen days later. The third patent says Mary is "of Perry County." By plotting her property on a map it would appear that her proberty straddled the line between Greene and Perry Counties in an area which became Hale County in 1865. Mary had a daughter also: Deborah b. about 1800 in SC. Married Ransome Day in SC and moved to Greene County about 1828/1829. Ransome bought 78.8 acres of land in Greene Co from US government on 5/15/1837. Children of Deborah Peterson and Ransome Day were Mary, Conrad, Nancy, Daniel, Nathaniel, Elizy Jane, and Sephronia. Other children of Mary Peterson were: WILLIAM NEAL, ELIZY JANE, AND NANCY. I am seeking information on the origins/ family of Mary Peterson, maybe known as "Polly", apparently a widow of a son (name unknown) of William Peterson of Laurens County SC in the 1800 census. I have additional "downstream" information on this line of Petersons, and will share same.

MORGAN /MILLINGTON or MIDDLETON
Trying to locate Morgan ancestors in SC. 1850 census for Henry Co. GA shows M. Morgan, age 45 born in South Carolina. Our family thinks this was Millington Morgan, but I have found no Millingtons in SC in that time period. M. Morgan would have been born in 1805 according to his age in the 1850 census. At the LDS Family History Room in their IGI file I found a Thomas Morgan b. in Laurens Co. in 1805, parents Henry Morgan and Mary Hopkins Morgan - also a William Morgan b. June, 1799 to the same parents. Thomas and William are names which appear in our Morgan family often, though Henry does not. Could Henry Morgan and his son Thomas be ancestors of the Morgans in Henry Co. and Fayette Co. Georgia? Is there some family connection of the Middletons and Morgans in early 1800s? Or, was there a Millington family which would have been connected? Any help anyone cangive me will surely be appreciated! Thanks -- George Pope

Cargills Dendy
I have just recently been sent a list of my family relatives from my fathers side of the family. While browsing the package in an attempt to locate the immediate link into my line I noticed the Cargills, Dendy's and a couple of others were scattered here in the Midlands and north. I had gone to the Laurens county web page to check it out and ran across ya'lls responses in search and answer of the Cargills and Dendys.
Mary Cargill and Thomas Dendy.
Daughter of Cornelius Cargill and Mary Lucy.
Others ... John Cargile III b.1775 in Laurens
I plan to sort through and produce Gen Sheets for them if you have additional lineage on the family I would like to here from you. If you would like to get a copy of the information that I have gathered I would also like to send it to you to help further everyones search. The family line covers Wilson, Norman, West, Nickel, Wilckerson (Wilkersen). I also have some of my wifes family from Roberson N.C. to Jesup Ga. they are the Collins, Stricklands and Garmans.

Can anyone tell me if there is an index or any printed material on the records of the Langston Church that I might be able to obtain information from? I am trying to locate a Juliana Coats Burnett and perhaps a Margaret Coats that I think might have been members of this church before leaving about 1850 and going to Ala. If you can help me in any way I would appreciate hearing from you and I thank you in advance for your assistance. Nettie Phillips

Looking for information on John and William Logan who left Laurens County around 1800 bound for the 'Northwest Territory'. I also would like to know if Thomas and Mary had any other children besides John and William. William served in the Revolutionary War, as a private under Dillard, Hayes, and Pickens. He was involved in the pursuit of Tory Cunningham who murdered 1 people near the Logan residence. Any information would be appreciated as I plan to travel to Laurens County for research soon. CRADDOCK / ELMORE / SAXON
I am looking for information on the ancestors and possible siblings of Thomas Elmore Craddock, b. 1781 in VA or SC. I have recently gotten information from a new found cousin, that she had found information that Edmund (Edward) Craddock and Ann Elmore had had a son Thomas in VA in 1781. From what she had found quite a while ago, it looks like an Edmund Craddock was in Laurens Co in 1810 when mentioned in a land deed. She also found that in 1804, an Edward Craddock and John A. Elmore were purchasers of an estate of a Mr. Berry in 1804. It looks like a Hugh Saxon and John Saxon appraised the estate of Edmund Craddock on Dec 30, 1826. By 1835, his widow had married a Mr. Saxon (I believe she found this information from a deed in Warren Co., KY, and couldn't tell from her notes whether the widow was in Laurens in 1835, or if the late Edmund Craddock was from Laurens Co.) She has one more note that Edmund Craddock managed the Mill Farm in Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1780.! If any of these names sound familiar, I would sure appreciate hearing from you!

I'm looking for information about Samantha Jane Todd Taylor. She married Euell Taylor prior to 1880. I found an 1880 Laurens Census at the Lexington County Library that listed her and Euell and two children during the 1880 Census. Her sister, Elizabeth Ann, married Euell's brother, Robert. They were also listed at the age of 21 and possibly just married. I was able to trace Euell Taylor back to the 1830's. His father's name was listed as Rick Taylor. I'm interested in finding out where Samantha Jane and Elizabeth Ann came from. Luckily, the Lexington, Laurens and Lancaster Census microfilms are all here in Lexington if anyone is interested in them. We have a new library and excellent microfilm projectors.

STONE / HENDER
John Stone and Susannah Henderson were married in Union County, S. C. in 1802. Given the Henderson and Stone families in Lauren County at the time it's likely their families were of Lauren County. By 1806 John and Susannah were in Claiborne County, Tennessee with Reuben and Thomas Stone, presumably brothers, or perhaps father and two sons: John and Thomas. Each of the latter named a son Reuben, Thomas and John, with Thomas also naming a son Silas. Does anyone know of Stone/Henderson families in Lauren County which would be a likely link. JONES, ANDERSON, BURNSIDE, FOUNTAIN, GRIFFIN,
Does anyone have any information on the Edward Jones family of Laurens, SC between 1790-1804. Edward died abt. 1804.
Edward's estate sold March 10, 1804. Listed as purchasers were: Elizabeth, Betsy, Joseph, Edward, Sarah, John and Gabriel Jones and John and William Burnside, Adi Griffin.
There was later a will of Elizabeth Jones, ded Edward (probably the one above) and lists John Jones, executor. Sons: Gabriel, James, Josiah, Daughters Frances Ward, Mary Burnside, Nancy Burnside. Other children were: Edward, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Sarah, Margaret and Lucy Jones.
From Laurens County, South Carolina Wills 1784-1840 by Colleen Elliott P.2, Will of David Logan-96th District dated July 5, 1789, Sale of estate dated August 18, 1790 names Gabriel Jones
This may be be the Jones Brothers listed in Wilkinson County, GA's 1820 census. For John Lawrence Jones who m. Lucy Taliaferro in 1797 in Surry NC, the number of children would be correct since a daughter Francis died young and would account for the missing female. We know that John Lawrence Jones had a brother Thomas per his Will which could account for the other elder male in the home.
Assuming that John Gabriel Jones, who later moved to Wilkinson and m. Nancy Bloodworth and later Mariah Carr, is one of the children in the above homes that would leave us Joseph Jones, William Jones or Josiah Jones. John Gabriel Jones would have been 19 at the time of this census.
Interesting that Israel Fountain and Frederick Dominer and John Dominer are living close to William Jones (the younger). The Fountains and Dominys also ended up in Wilkinson County, GA for the 1820 census.

MCCRARY / YOUNG/DUKE / HAMMOCK
Does Laurens County have an 1850 Census online anywhere or does anyone have access to an 1840/1850 census for South Carolina. My McCrary line goes back to this county on Duncan's Creek. It is mentioned that the Youngs were also some original pioneers of this area. I am looking for a Miles Hiram Young born in South Carolina in 1828. His father may have been George Young. His first son was named George Alexander. Miles may have had a brother named Mathew Alexander Young. If anyone knows anything about the Youngs of Duncan Creek, please help. Also, I am interested because of the McCrary connection to anything about the McCrarys and history of the region. William McCrary and wife Mary McCrary are descendants of John McCrary and Jane Greer of Duncan's Creek. Martha McCrary married Hope Hull Hammock. Their daughter Francis married Samuel L. Duke. Thank you.

PONDS / BOOZER / DAVIS
I am trying to find information in Laurens County about my great-great grandfather's famil. My great-great grandparents were Michael (1830) and Francis (1843). Their children were Alice (b. 1861) who married Richard B. Boozer George (b. 1865) Bascom (Also known as John Bascom and "Backy"), born April 1, 1868 Lizzie (b. 1870) Thomas (b. December 14, 1873) Mary (b. 1875) Estelle (b. 1877), and Cromwell (b. 1879). Bascom married Ida Armstead who was born in Tennessee. Bascom was by great-grandfather. The family appeared in the 1880 census of Lexington County but were not there in 1870. So many people in the community that came from Larens County, SC in the Exodus of the lage 1800s, I thought perhaps they originally from Laurens County before moving to Lexington County and then I surmised (which is most likely wrong) that the family stopped over in Tennessee prior to moving to Arkansas. James and Francis don't show up in Arkansas. Only ones to show up there were Alice,! John Bascom, and George. Thomas and Crowell worked for the railroad. Thomas moved to Conta Costra County (Richmond) California where he bought land and lived there until he died November 1, 1948. Any help with the Ponds and Boozer families - African American and Native American - would be greatly appreciated.
