Abstract of Rev. War Pension Application

CONNELLY, John (Mary). W.74.
10 Nov. 1832. Bedford Co., Tenn. John Connelly, age 72 years 9 months and 14 days,
declares he was drafted as a militiaman in Burnswick Co., VA., in 1778 under Capt. Harrison,
he thinks, and marched to Gen. Muhlenburg's headquarters at Cabin Point in Prince George County.
He was stationed there three months and when discharged returned home.
Some time afterward Col. John Jones of Brunswick County proposed to each young blacksmith in the
regiment that if they would repair and put in complete order twelve muskets, each should be exempt
from the next tour of duty.
He, an elder brother and an apprentice boy repaired and put in good order 36 guns and delivered them
to Col. Jones. The time he was engaged in repairing the guns was a month or more.
In the spring of 1779 he was again called out in the drafted militia in Brunswick County and placed
in Mark Stead's or William Blalock's company (he is not positive which), and marched under Col. Halkham
and St. George Tucker to the fork of James River called Pointty fork to Gen. Steuben's headquarters.
On the same evening they joined Gen. Steuben, the British commenced a discharge of cannon across the river
at the American army and Gen. Steuben marched his army about twelve miles from that place and encamped.
He marched to Cumberland Court House and Prince Edward Court House and was discharged there.

Albemarle Parish was created by an Act of the General Assembly in Virginia in 1738 from the parishes
of Southwark and Lawne's Creek, having its northern boundary along the Blackwater River.
Surry County was formed in 1652 out of territory belonging to James City County south of the James River,
and Albemarle Parish was a part of Surry until 1754, when Sussex was partitioned off.

John Connelly married Mary Stanford, daughter of Samuel Stanford and his wife Margaret, March 02,1790
in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina.
Mary was born about 1767 in North Carolina. She died after 1850 in Tennessee
