I'm researching my Great Grandmother's ancestors the Pottenger's. I notice an ancestor Elizabeth Pottenger married a John Bowie in Maryland in my research. Could this possibly be a ancestor to James Bowie? I purchased a copy of Prince George's County, Maryland, Land Records 1739-1743 Published by TLC Genealogy and one states relations of son-inlaw to one of my ancestors. And why is there so many controverse to where James Bowie was born? I notice claim to Cumberland, Tennessee; Logan, Kentucky and Georgia, who is correct?

Greetings from Down Under! I have always enjoyed the stories of Jim Bowie, and grew up on the TV series here in Sydney in the late 50's. It is great to discover this site. I recently purchased the book by William C. Davis, "Three Roads to the Alamo", who seems to question the authenticity of the painting of Jim Bowie. Has any further light been added to this? Shall look forward to keeping up to date with your page, Kind regards Bruce

I thought he was wounded as well as sick. When he took to the cot at the Almo. And that when they broke into the infirmary. The last thing he could do or did was defending himself with his bowie knife. Or maybe this was told to enhance his ledgen?

022899 I always will think of Jim Bowie as a fighting man and a business gentleman. My folks are from the great state of Texas. And my question is didn't Bowie just before the Alamo have a child with his new wife. A Mexican lady? The population just before the conflict was about 15,000 inhabitants that's like a small town were ever one new each other but documents rarely kept with the mestizo folks. forgive me, but I've been touched by his spirit. Steve, are we related in some way. My family are originally from Scotland. I think our family tree links back to the Bowie family that remained in Scotland when John Bowie emigrated to America in 1706. I have just found all this info on the Bowie Family, nd it is amasing how it all links together. My father - John Bowie - had always said that Jim Bowie was our ancestor. I never believed him, until now. He will be amased when I tell about your site, and all the info on the Bowie Family. Please feel free to mail me and say Hi. Bye for Now. Pete.

I ran out of room in my first entry. While in Little Rock, Ark., take time to go to the Arkansas Territorial Restoration Museum & see the "Bart Moore" Bowie knife. It's believed to have been made for Jim Bowie by James Black, Washington, Arkansas. It's worth the trip.

I spent approximately 2 years trying to obtain the "Bart Moore" knife for a museum or institution in Texas. After much political controversy, it was obtained on a loan basis and is now on display at the Arkansas Territorial Restoration Museum in Little R ck, Arkansas.

Dear folks, Wonderful. Very enlightening. I am a Civil War reenactor and part of my "story" is that I was in the Texas War for Independence in 1835-36. I met Jim Bowie in San Antonio while there and we became good budies. Just before my leaving San Antonio to join up with Sam Houston., Jim gave me a knife which I still wear with pride. Thanks Jim White

I love the internet... I'm finding out things I would have never known. The McMillins were also early settlers of Catahoula Parish. No doubt our ancester's paths crossed many times. My ggg-grandfather had something to do with early breeding of the now w rld famous Catahoula Leopard Dog (Catahoula Cur to locals). Look it up. It is a very interesting animal. Also, my mother's father published the Catahoula News which can trace its roots back to 1852 to a small settlement called Trinity which is across t e river from Jonesville. Also, Harrisonburg had some Civil War action from a large Confederate fort overlooking the town and the Ouachita River. They do Civil war reinactments there every November. Very interesting place.

Back in 1982, while an undergraduate student at UCLA, I shared an apartment with Steven C. Bowie - who grew into a great friend. Steve had this incredible knack for boiling down life's idiosyncracies and making his very stressed out roomates laugh until heir sides ached. Bowie's must be blessed with some amazing lineage! I've had some relatives say we are descended from Col. James Bowie (1796-1836). This is wrong; we are descended from James Bowie, free man of color(c.1794-1832). The two Jameses are probably related. Finding out how has been the hard part. You'll notice t at James, FMC did a lot of things with John J. Bowie (Col. James's oldest brother). In the 1820 census, John has 4 free people of color living with him; they correspond to what James, FMC's household would have been at the time.
