"The Friends of Civil War Paulding County" Dedicated To The Preservation of Civil War Sites In Paulding County Georgia

In Honor of The Men Who Fought & Died Here And for Current and Future Generations

Welcome To The "Friends of Civil War Paulding County" Home Page. Paulding County Played A Vital Role In General Sherman`s "Atlanta Campaign"In 1864. To Avoid The Formidable Works That Confederate General Joseph E.Johnston Had Prepared For Him At Allatoona Pass. And Being Familiar With The Geography of The Area. General Sherman, For The First Time Since The Campaign Began, Decided to Abandon The Western And Atlantic Railroad And With Wagon Trains Loaded With Twenty Days Rations And Supplies ,Chose To Flank Allatoona Pass And March SouthWest, In The Direction of Dallas And From There, On to Marietta, His Objective. Thus Avoiding The Carnage that Awaited Him. General Johnston Upon Becoming Aware of Sherman`s Move. Pulled The Confederate Army Out of Allatoona Pass And Headed Off In The Direction of Dallas. On May 25, 1864 The Two Armies Met At "New Hope Church" The Fighting Was Furious And Lasted Until The Late Afternoon When A Heavy Thunderstorm Began. The Fighting In This Area Continued Until June 5, 1864. The Area Being Referred To In History Books As "The Dallas, New Hope Line" The Major Fighting Being "The Battle of New Hope Church"On May 25th, The Battle of Pickett`s Mill"On May 27th, And The "Battle of Dallas" On May 28th. Due to The Thick Forest And Undergrowth In This Area That Prevented Both Armies From Seeing Their Enemy. Sherman Referred To This Whole Area as "A Big Indian War" With The Skirmishing Almost Constant. And Many of Them Falling Just Short Of A Major Battle. Thus Paulding County Is Rich In Historic Sites. Be It Historic Battlefields, Hospitals, Headquarters or Homes That Are Historically Significant. Also a Wealth of Civil War Roads Remain. Though Much Already Has Been Lost To Development, Many Sites of Historic Value Remain. All Members of "Civil War Paulding" Realize That We Should Have Existed Thirty Years Ago, But I Suppose The Old Adage "Better Late Than Never" Will Have To Suffice. We Also Realize That Development Is Progress, And Progress Must Continue, But We Are Also Becoming Aware That Developers Are Willing To Work With Us. When They Can Possibly Work Around These Historic Places. They Are Willing To Do So.We Feel That Working In Unison With Other County Orginazations Such As "The Paulding County Historical Society" And The "General William J.Hardee Camp 1397 Sons of Confederate Veterans, "Local and State Politicians. And Developers, Builders And Local Citizens. We Will Be Successful In Preserving These Hallowed Grounds For Our, And Future Generations.
