"Our Gen. Roddey determined to check the advance of the demon by giving battle, although confident it would be but momentary unless assistance could come to his relief. Disposing of his feeble conmmand as profitably as possible he continued to front Dodge, fighting all the time and harrassing him at every point. For seven days our little command, consisting of but three regiments, only 800 effective men, had fought hard a force three times our number besides being splendedly armed and mounted. Daily we were growing more feeble with no apparent hope.
Finally, in the last hour Providence favoring our cause, sent Gen. Forrest to turn the tide of battle to our side."
Capt. Whetstone, Co. K, Alabama Partisan Rangers.

An ancester, Wifes' great-great grandfather,
J.W. Wilson was a Pvt. and "lost", never heard
from after the conflicts ceased. He was from near
Hamilton or Winfield area. Thought to be in either
dismounted Calvary or infantry. Rumor in family was
he was killed at Shilo, but back then it was difficult
to confirm anything. All we know for sure is he was
a Confederate soldier and gave his life for the cause.

I was in search of info on the Russells and almost flipped out when I found the pictures of my great, great grandparents Elias James and family. This is wonderful. I grew up in this area and think I was born in the log cabin that was originally built in the small area of Colbert County that was across the creek from where everything was destroyed. This is very near Pogo. Lived in that area until I was 18 and still visit the area where my nephew lives on the land in the house that is built around the old log cabin.
Great job!!! I would love contact from anyone about that the Russells or James in that area. Please Re: James family so I will know to open the email.

Company E 4th Regiment Alabama Calvary, Confederate States Army. There are no records of this name on the muster rolls.

I was a reenactor for about six years from the time I was 15 until I was 20, but the past three years I have kinda strayed away from it. I miss and hope to continue it some day. I had numerous ancestors who fought for the confederacy, all whom I am very proud of. The one I am most familiar with is my great great great grandfather. Rubien Anderson Gilmore, he fought in the 13th Georgia, Vol.Inf. His unit fought in the Army of Northern Virgina. He fought in nearly every major campagin that army was in. Comments: I have enjoyed your website over the last year or two, as I
return to it every so often to see what's new. Gen. Roddey's
cavalry division has never received the acclimation it
deserves, so this site is much appreciated. I pursued,
directly with the publisher, getting a copy of the book that
was never published: "Johnny Reb, Confederate Spy". It is
basically the memoirs of Capt. McDonald of the 4th Alabama.
The book is mainly about his detached duty behind Federal
lines in Kentucky, with little about the rest of the
regiment or its actions, but is still an interesting read.
It's a shame it was never published so everyone interested
could read it.
