Franklin County Confederate Monument

Russellville, Alabama

To the defenders of the Old Southland, her altars and her firesides: They believed they were right; They proved their faith by their works, their heroic deeds and the unselfish sacrifice of their lives.

They sleep on many a battle field, enriched by their heart's best blood freely given in defense of the Lost Cause, "Lost" but just and holy still. The memory of which and theirs shall be forever enshrined in the hearts of their mothers, their wives, their sisters, and their daughters.

No more the "Stars and Bars" above them waves. No more to the charge of the bugle sounds, but "lights out" and in their consecrated graves, they sleep the sleep of eternal peace: In memory, with loving hands and tender we wrap the flag they loved about them and pray- to them the God of battles render, the just need of praise, we here express.

The old monument is getting very hard to read, if there any mistakes I must apologize for for any mistakes or omissions. I received help in reading the above name from Myra Hester Warren and Nancy R. Harvey of the John W. Harris Chapter #2437 Russellville, AL, United Daughter of the Confederacy. Thanks to them for transcribing names that I had earlier missed.
