Mel Odom, of the Greenville County Genealogical Web Page, who has provided so much support to the Sixteenth Web Page has identified these men as being from the following Greenville County Communities:Chick Springs, Milford, Brushy Creek, and Rocky Creek (Batesville).

This is my revised roster of Company F, Sixteenth South Carolina. It is drawn from a wide group of sources. There are problems with it. I have attempted to show all men so some duplication is possible. In my estimation, F Company and George Holtzclaw are the rocks of the Sixteenth. The company comes from the Batesville Community and Brushy Creek and P.D. Gilreath and George Holtzclaw were the two best Captains produced by this regiment. The men of F Company compared favorably when compared to other companies in casualty and deaths but nobody in F ever seems to be left behind or captured, unless badly wounded. Of only nine captures at least four were the badly wounded at Franklin. At Greensboro, F Company reports 68 men. However, this is from the memory rolls of F and men who gave false names at Greensboro in 1865 were probably known and more correctly reflected on the later rosters. F appears to have frequently acted as Color Company of the Sixteenth.

Some of the possible problems with these rosters include dead men who surrendered or dead men walking and men like Crayton and Drayton Chandler, Beverly and W.B. Smith, J.R. and J. Ransom Hawkins, Zion Hawkins and John and Jonathan Miller(s). The Smith boys I will never be able to sort out and the same can be said for the Hawkins boys.

Of the 181 men of Company F: only 9 were captured; 7 at Franklin, of these seven, four are known to be badly wounded. Only one man was captured at Atlanta and Kingston. The man at Kingston was probably in the hospital at that location but could have been caught in the scramble from Missionary Ridge.

18 were Killed in Action, 35 Died of Illness, and only 2 Died in Prisons, one appears to have been in a railroad accident and killed near or directly after the surrender. Those killed in action died as follows: 10 at Franklin, 2 at Atlanta and Decatur and one each at Atlanta, Kennesaw Mt., Marietta, Nashville, and Pulaski, Tn.

In addition to the 18 killed, 29 members were wounded, several on multiple occasions, thus the difference in number of wounds and men wounded. Although it is difficult to see who was wounded at Franklin and who at Nashville, there appear to be 11 at Franklin and one at Nashville, 4 at Atlanta, 3 at Kennesaw Mt., 2 each at Missionary Ridge, Jackson, Mississippi, Dallas and Dalton. One was wounded at Lovejoy and for one the place is unknown.

There were 68 men present at the surrender, if all sources are combined. I wonder if Holtzclaw did not gain paroles in some way for all of his men, even those not physically present. I cannot imagine a company with that many present at the end... but if any man inspired that kind of loyalty it would have been Capt. Holtzclaw. The single source that provides many of these names is valid but post war and it states paroled Greensboro, which raises some question in my mind. I am also certain that there are duplications. I am very comfortable with the fact that Capt. Holtzclaw had more men at Greensboro than any other company of the Sixteen... and I am certain it was not even close.

21 of the men from F Company attended the 1883 meeting where the colors were brought from hiding. No member of F Company that was captured galvanized or fought for the Union. All the men appear to have come from Greenville County and one is carried as having deserted.

Company F, Sixteenth South Carolina and Company E, Third State Troops, 1-62 to 1-63

Many of the men from F Company, served in Company E of the Third State Troops from January of 1862 until January of 1863. This unit of State Troops was commanded by Captain William B. Green who served as a Lieutenant of Company F, Sixteenth S.C.V. Numbering with those serving in both units are William Green, Alfred Davis, G.W. Martin, Hembre Green, James Bridwell, Ervin Green, and others. Some like William Green would join other units, others like James Bridwell would find the way back to the 16th. You will note that almost every surname mentioned in F Company of the Sixteenth is to be found on Bil's roster listed below.

I was wondering about Jesse Hawkins, 3rd Lt, Co F.-if he was from Brushy Creek area. There was a Jesse Hawkins who is buried in the small family cemetery in the middle of the Eastgate Shopping Center parking lot who could have been Jesse of the 16th's father. The older Jesse Hawkins deeded land to Brushy Creek Baptist Church in 1825. I haven't done any research on this and it is all conjecture.
SM

Jesse Hawkins
B: abt 1831 (1850 census)
Son of Herrington Hawkins.

Herrington Hawkins was administrator for the estate of Jesse Hawkins and filed for a final settlement late 1867. Named as legal heirs at law were Sarah Hawkins (widow) and Beauregard S. Hawkins, presumably a son. Sarah and Jesse were married on the 1860 census but their son was born after the census as he is not listed on the 1860 census. ( It is interesting to note that on the printed form for Probate Court of Greenville District, SC, dated 4 Dec 1865, the line "__year of the Independence of the State of South Carolina" has been marked through and "90th year of the Independence of the U S of America handwritten in its place.) Lt. Jesse Hawkins was the grandson of Jesse Hawkins, who gave the land for Brushy Creek Baptist Church in 1825.

Paroled after 8 months from Ft. Delaware Prison.

His brother, Thomas was a Scout in Co. E., Hampton Legion. His brother, William Taylor Traynham was CSA Co. F, 3rd Regiment, GA. The daughter of Uncle William, married Mastin Stone, had several children, some of them were in the Confederate Army.
His father was James Traynham, who married Miss Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of Dr. Thomas Taylor who was a native of Ireland and was at one time a surgeon in the British Army. I believe he was the youngest of 12 children.
In a 1908 outlining his family history and speaking of himself,he wrote: "J. H. Traynham was a member and officer in Co. F, 16th SC Vols. in the Civil War, was desperately wounded at the Battle of Franklin, Tenn., while leading his company into battle. Was captured and taken to Ft. I believe W. H. Smith and Wyatt Smith are the same man. I recently received the compiled service record of W. H. Smith from NARA. He enlisted 17 May 1862 at Camp Leesburg by Col. McCullough; however, July through October he is sick in the hospital in Summerville and then in Columbia. He was discharged 16 Oct 1862 by reason of disability. He was discharged by R. Rhett and received his final pay on 22 Oct 1862.

You have attributed Samuel L. Vaughn of Co F to Company F of the Legion. I don't believe the Samuel in the 16th was with the Legion. His service was as follows: Samuel Vaughn. Original PVT in company, age 18 (14 Jun 61); present Jun 61-Dec 63; at Chimborazo (debility) 19-28 Feb 63; POW New Market Heights 29 Sep 64; arrived Point Lookout 5 Oct 64; exchanged 17 Mar 65; no further record; [probably sent home on sick furlough]; b. 25 Dec 42; d. 2 Jul 28; bur Green Pond Bap, near Cashville, Spartanburg County.

* All the armies of the Confederacy were reorganized in April of 1862. Many officers lost positions and resigned or enlisted in other units. Wm. Faulkner, the Southern writer and Nobel winner, addresses this in Satoris, a novel that is a thinly hidden biography of his grandfather, a Colonel in Confederate Service who lost his position. Most of these men chose to serve in the ranks and more than a few former Captains and Colonels died in those hallowed ranks as private soldiers.
