It all started on Mother's Day in Spokane Washington. While mothers were being honored during a church service, Mrs. John Dodd recalled the day her mother died. At the time, she and her five brothers were too young to understand the meaning of death. Her father had held all the children close to his heart, and from the moment of her mother's passing, he became both father and mother to them. Through the years that followed, he surrounded those six children with the best influences, taught them to Golden Rule, and gave them a solid faith on which to stand. Mrs. Dodd took the idea, of honoring fathers to the local ministerial association, and by June of 1910, it had become an established event. Since that first Father's Day, we have seen some major changes in American homes. The father's role has teken on a new dimension in recent years. Due to a fluctuating job market, many a dad has opted to stay home with the kids while mom has gone to the office each day. Perhaps that is why Jo Ann Heidbreder wrote: Mender of toys, leader of boys; Changer of fuses; kisser of bruises; Mover of couches, soother of ouches; Hanger of screens, guide for our teens Fixer of bikes, chastiser of tykes; Raker of leaves, cleaner of eaves; Dryer of dishes, fulfiller of wishes~ Oh bless him, Dear Lord. |

But whatever the Father's role may be, the Scripture commands that he is to be honored (Eph 6:2). Fathers will not always be right in their decisions, and nowhere in the Bible are we commanded to always agree with them. But a long life full of blessing is promised to those who obey God's commandment to treat their fathers with love and respect. Also, when children live under their father's care, they are exhorted to obey him as well. (Colossians 3:20). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
