Origem: Em setembro de 1987, 21 anos depois do encerramento da série original, surge uma nova série e uma nova Enterprise. Não aquela do capitão Kirk, mas uma de alta tecnologia e supereficiente, abrigando uma nova tripulação, além de jovens, mulheres e crianças, terrestres e extraterrestres.  A série se situa 85 anos a frente da série anterior, isto é, no século XXIII. Apesar de  na época ter sido criticada por ser "high tec" demais, foi considerada uma das mais bem sucedidas séries após o fim da Série Clássica. Como bem disse Gene Roddenberry na época de seu lançamento: "Star Trek é uma série de ficção científica e não de fantasia. E ficção científica tem de ser baseada em fatos científicos e suposições corretamente embasadas. Se presumirmos que a humanidade evolui temos de projetar uma Enterprise ainda mais eficiente e tecnologicamente mais avançada que a primeira. 85 anos após as primeiras viagens, praticamente todos os erros já são conhecidos e foram corrigidos. Não faria sentido colocar uma nova série com todos os problemas e falhas técnicas da anterior."  De fato, a nova Enterprise é bem maior que a primeira, sendo uma espécie de "cidade itinerante" com tecnologia exuberante, visual limpo, quase sem botões, além dos comandos por voz. A característica desta série está na dramaticidade dos episódios, envolvendo toda uma rede de conflitos e tensões comuns entre seres de miscinegações diferentes e entre as famílias e as comunidades.
