This paper represents a synthesis of the investigations made by the collective of the Hygiene Department, Medical Faculty, and of the Hygiene Institute, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on the effects of the treatment with ionised air upon certain biological processes, or upon the performance, during the physical exercise in Man and Animal. Favourable results in physical exercise were obtained under the action of negative air ions. The treatment by ionised air was applied daily, for 2-4 weeks, using moderate ionic concentrations, not more than 20-30,000 small ions of one electric sing/ml air. The duration of the daily treatment was 15-20 mins for a seated man and 1-2- hours for animals. The results were as follows:

Spontaneous motility, depressed by a diet with cholesterol in excess, remained high, almost to normal levels, in animals concomitantly treated by ionised air (Frits et al., 1963; Moga et al., 1963).

In maximum muscular exercise lactacidemia remained at a lower level on animals, treated by negative air ions, compared with those treated by positive air ions (Deverenco et al., 1977).

Under the influence of air ions, animals subjected to maximal physical exercise developed histological changes in the thyroid and adrenal cortex and in the endocrine glands which play an important role in theadaptation of the organism to muscular activity (Derevenco et al.,1977).

In young sportsmen treated with negative air ions a better cardiovascular and respiratory adaptation to effort was observed: the pulse, blood pressure, and respiration frequency returned sooner to normal levels (Deleanu and Mozes-Lorincz, 1975). The performance obtained in the course of the training in a number of tests indicated a greater improvement in the sportsmen treated by negative ionised air (Straus et al., 1965).
