RESENHAS DOS CAPÍTULOS 12 E 13 DO LIVRO "FUNCTIONAL METABOLISM REGULATION AND ADAPTATION"

"Marcelo Hermes-Lima has written an extensive, detailed and up-to-date review of free radicals and their role in biology and disease (Chapters 12 and 13). The coverage is exhaustive. The autor discusses not only reactive oxigen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) but also sulfur-  and carbon-based radicals. Typics include the mechanisms by which diferent types of free radicals are procuced, the biological defenses against ROS (enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase; glutathione; thioredoxin; vitamins C and E; plant polyphenols), the damage caused by oxidation of lipids, proteins, and DNA, the diseases associated with oxidative damage (Wilson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis), and the role of free radicals in phagocytosis."
