1.1) Feminine of the Nouns Rules


Accordingly to the masculine noun it is necessary to change it to feminine words such as:
filho (son) - filha (daughter)
anão (male dwarf) - anã (female dwarf)
avô (grandfather) - avó (grandmother)
mestre (masculine of master) – mestra (feminine of master)
elefante (male elephant) - elefanta (female elephant)
leão (male lion) – leoa (female lion)
macaco (male monkey) – macaca (female monkey)
Adding the letter “a” to the masculine of the noun:
autor (male author) – autora (female author)
deus (god) – deusa (goddess)
cantor (male singer) – cantora (female singer)
doutor (male doctor) – doutora (female doctor)
Senhor (Sir) – Senhora (Lady)
juiz (male judge) – juiza (female judge)
cônsul (male consul) – consulesa (female consul)
Feminine nouns that is different from its masculine:
pai (father) – mãe (mother)
bode (male goat) – cabra (female goat)
carneiro (male sheep) – ovelha (female sheep)
homem (man) – mulher (woman)
padrinho (godfather) – madrinha (godmather)
genro (son-in-law) – nora (daughter-in-law)
padastro (stepfather) – madastra (stepmather)
marido (husband) – esposa (wife)
cavalo (male horse) – égua (female horse)
boi (male cow) – vaca (female cow)
However, some nouns have only one gender:
The Epicenos: It characterizes animals. They have only one gender for male and female.
o jacaré macho (male crocodile) - o jacaré fêmea (female crocodile)
o macho da cobra (male snake) - a fêmea da cobra (female snake)
a onça macho (male wildcat) - a onça fêmea (female wildcat)
o peixe macho (male fish) - o peixe fêmea (female fish)
Sobrecomuns: It characterizes people represented by one form of gender for masculine and feminine.
a criança (menino / menina) (children)
a testemunha (homem / mulher) (witness)
o cônjuge (homem / mulher) (spouse)
o guia (homem / mulher) (guide)
o monstro (homem / mulher) (monster)
Comum de dois: It has only one form of gender but characterizes masculine and feminine adding a specific article.
o colega (male colleague) – a colega (female colleague)
o artista (male artist) – a artista (female artist)
o motorista (male driver) – a motorista (female driver)
o cliente (male client) – a cliente (female client)
um estudante (one male student) – uma estudante (one female student)
um repórter (one male journalist) – uma repórter (one female journalist)
um intérprete (one male translator) – uma intérprete (one female translator)
