Burn tests
What you need:
-Stuff to burn
-A lighter
-A safe place to burn it
-A webcam to show the world the results
It started when cleaning up the remaining dirty NG from my last synth, seeing how beautifully it burned, I just had to show it off :)
(All vids are in the *.rm format, you need realone or player or realalternative codecs to play that)
========================
The first test is a drop of NG burning.
Check out the vid
here (1.4 MB)
A few things that got my attention:
-Very nice flame color (allmost perfect white - maybe a good indicator of purity ?)
-Even though it is very energetic, it seems to have trouble maintaining a flame front
========================
Secondly, I tested some NG on a piece of paper, to get a constant burn rate
Get the vid here (1.5 MB)
Notes:
-The burn rate decreased dramatically
-The flame got the nice carbon/sodium yellow from the tissue
-you can't hear this, but I got several small harldy noticable explosions
========================
Last NG test, done with artificial light, giving nicer colors.
Get the vid here (1.5 MB)
========================
I had a film can of previous batch black powder near for making fuses :)
Get the vid here (0.4 MB)
Notes:
-even though it was very little (0.2 grams max), it blinded my cam
-it made a very nice smoke donut: outer diameter ~20-25 cm
-it is fairly fast for the home-made stuff (I'll write procedure sometime)
========================
Aluminized NG burn test
5 parts NG + 2 parts 400mesh flake Al powder (in other words, heavily overfueled)
Get the vid here (0.9 MB mpg format)
Notes:
-Bright hot flame/sparks (charred my nail !!)
-Too much fuel (found specks of Al remaining)
-It still has trouble keeping the flame front ...
Experimenting with the video software also gives a nice still image ...
