Bicentennial Dict: William REWELL b. 00-00-1825, UK, occ: Boatbuilder, m. 00-08-1848, in Western Australia, Australia, Sarah TAPPER, b. 00-08-1830, Western Australia, Australia, (daughter of Daniel TAPPER and Ann ?). He arrived in Western Australia on the CAROLINE on 12/10/1829 with his parents. He attended Perth School in 1834 and was a Boatowner in 1862. He bought Perth Town Lot H46 in 1865-6. He was listed as a Victualler at the ROCKINGHAM HOTEL in 1867. In 1872 he was a Perth Gardener, was a Fisherman in 1883 and a Boatbuilder in 1885. Inquirer, 20 Feb 1841 ROBBERY AT THE "COMMISSARIAT" Small Iron Chest Containing 100 pounds Mr Armstrong the native interpreter and several natives joined in the search. It came out during the examination before the magistrate that as George Rewell, the fisherman together with his son, were pulling up the river between the hours of 2 and 3 in the morning in question, their attention was drawn to a loud noise in the neighbourhood of the court house, apparently of the clang of some iron substance violently struck against another. Rewell subsequently pulled in near the jetty but seeing no one, and hearing nothing more he proceeded away to his fishing ground. The approach of Rewell no doubt disturbed the villains who must have decamped rather hastily, as the hammer before alluded to was found close to the chest. Memoirs, Edith May Geddes, 1976 My grandfather Rewell had always been a very hard man to live with. The Geddes Mystery, Brian Jones, Spectrum, 2002 Alice's father, William Rewell, followed closely in his father's footsteps. He, too, became a boat owner, a gardener and - in the Congregationalist tradition - a daily reader of the Bible. Unfortunately, he lacked grandfather Rewell's warmth and compassion. |
