It is the most revered, most feared, and most mysterious name in the
history of the world and is referred to as the "Incommunicable Name."
It is so revered and feared that millions of people have refused to even pronounce it.
Because of disuse, the mysterious name was almost lost in antiquity. Other words have been
substituted for it in both ancient and modem documents. Most Bibles still avoid its use. A
warning against its misuse occupies a full ten percent of the Ten Commandments.
It is the name of Almighty God, the Creator of the universe, revealed to Moses some 3,500
years ago.
The holy name is: YHWH. The Hebrew spelling is
shown on the background to this age.
For centuries the correct pronunciation has been obscure, but scholars are now almost
certain that the proper vowel insertions render the name as "Yahweh," pronounced
Yah-way. The short form of the name is "Yah."
Due to a misunderstanding of Hebrew vowel placements, since medieval times Yahweh has been
pronounced "Jehovah," and Yah as "Jah," but scholars now know that
this is incorrect. Also, the English letter "J" is a new letter in the
alphabet, not even appearing in the original King James Bible in A.D. 1611.
Due to overreaction to the stern wording of the commandment and fear of even inadvertently
profaning the sacred name, ancient rabbis eliminated its use altogether in temple worship.
This began a tradition of word substitution for the Creator's name which continues today.
When Jews today see YHWH in Hebrew, which appears some 7,000 times in the
Bible, they pronounce it "Adonai, " the word for "Lord."
Most English Bibles follow this tradition and translate YHWH as "the
LORD;" thus most Christians rarely if ever hear of the actual personal name of God,
and most do not know what it is. This is strange.
Jesus is called many things in the Bible, such as the Savior, Redeemer,
Shepherd, the Rose of Sharon, the Bright and Morning Star, the Lilly of the Valley and
many more; however, these are all titles or affectionate descriptions. But His real
personal name is Yeshua (sometimes spelled Y'shua), or the expanded
"Yehoshua," which means "Yahweh is salvation."
The Hebrew for the name of Yeshua, the Son of God is .
"Christ" is not his last name, but is from the Greek word for
the Hebrew "Messiah," his title, meaning "anointed one."
The New Testament reveals that "Jesus is LORD." Technically, however, the word
"LORD" should be rendered "Yahweh," making the profound statement that
Jesus was the God of the Old Testament in human form, the most astounding fact in
human history!
The sacred name itself is an additional portrait of the incredible incarnation.
Many people, including this writer, report a greater intimacy
with the Lord by calling Him by His actual Hebrew name,
the name as He actually revealed it to the world. Try it!
"Sing unto God, sing praises to his name:
extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH" (Yah)
(Psalm 68:4, KJV).
"I will declare your name to my brothers;
in the congregation I will praise you"
(Psalm 22:22, NIV)
"In God we make our boast all day long,
and we will praise your name forever"
(Psalm 44:8)
"Your name, O LORD (YHWH), endures forever"
(Psalm 135:13)
Amen.
