Hurtling Toward Oblivion
Do you sometimes feel like an isolated weirdo for believing that we are near "the end of the age," a term Jesus used? You see the evidence from signs given in the Bible, and you sense it in your spirit, but you feel like a voice crying in the wilderness? Most people act like things will just go on indefinitely. Many Christians even scoff at the idea.
Be encouraged! I have just discovered a new book that makes the case for the soon end of the age from a non-biblical, purely logical perspective. The book is "Hurtling Toward Oblivion, a Logical Argument for the End of the Age," by Richard A. Swenson, M.D.
Although a brilliant thinker, the idea of the end of the age never occurred to Swenson until one day in 1994 he was driving down I-94 in Wisconsin and the reality of it suddenly exploded in his mind. The thought so overwhelmed him that he had to pull off the highway. This triggered his intensive study of world trends and eventually this book. Some of his chapter titles are: Profusion Through Progress, The Irreversibility of Progress, The Phenomenon of Exponential growth, and The Threshold of Lethality.
Swenson says, "This book is not a theological treatise but instead a trends-based estimation of our most probable future. Based on that research, I believe there is abundant and compelling evidence to suggest the world system is approaching a cataclysmic conclusion."
While not a theological book, Swenson is a Christian. The book ends with this sentence, "If Christ is even now saddling His horse to return, may He find us faithful."
"Hurtling Toward Oblivion" is published by Navpress (1999), and it is available through bookstores or at www.navpress.com.
