CHINA HOLDS LARGE SCALE MILITARY EXERCISE
From BBC World Service
"China has announced it's holding large-scale land, sea, and air military
exercises involving more than one-hundred thousand troops... The Communist Party newspaper reported a Chinese military spokesman as saying the exercises were of a scale rarely seen in recent years in terms of their scope, number of participating troops, and thoroughness."

NOTE: A study of wars since 500 B.C. shows a recent, dramatic increase. Of at least 82 world conflicts between 1990 and 1995, all but three were civil or ethnic. An Associated Press report on December 29, 1999 said, “The century is coming to a close with a third of the world's 193 nations embroiled in conflict, nearly twice the Cold War level.”

LATER ADDED NOTE:

Here is more information on wars from the Scientific American magazine, June 2000, by Jeffrey Boutwell and Michael T. Klare.

"More than 100 conflicts have erupted since 1990, about twice the number for previous decades. These wars have killed more than five million people, devastated entire geographic regions, and left tens of millions of refugees and orphans."
