No real theme for this half term, the girls has been getting acquainted with the new programme, which they will follow from September.
All the girls were presented with their Badges for completed the Cambwest 2000 challenge and most attended the county challenge round up which was held in the display arena at Woodgreen Animal shelter. This was a lot of fun, all the girls had a great time, and they learnt some line dancing and square dancing.
We also took part in Huntingdon town carnival parade, as the Mayor is our Unit Ambassador we got the honour of walking behind his car. Oh boy! Was this fun, the rain started just as the parade started and oh did it rain, Huntingdon is not a large town but everyone was soaked before the parade had barely started. The rain didn’t dampen anyone’s fun, the girls sang out loud and took turns to carry the flags, which they held straight and with pride. The crowd cheered as the parade passed by.
Another highlight this term was when I had to explain to the girls that we had to cut that nights meeting short due to the local by-elections, because of a guest speaker the hall had to be checked for explosives, a sniffer dog was bought in and the girls had to remain quiet while he did his job, after he’d completed his checks his owner explained how if he’d found anything he would not move away from what he’d found, he gave us a demonstration and said if we could get his dog to move then he’d sing us a song, his dog didn’t move. The girls enjoyed this surprise visit and the dog enjoyed the fussing. The girls kindly agreed to help set up the chairs for the meeting and as we were about to leave the guest speaker walked in, he came straight over to us and appologised for disrupting out meeting, he and his wife signed autographs for the girls and also signed the unit photo album, then kindly agreed to have his photo taken with us so we could add it to our album. The guest speaker was ex Prime Minister John Major.
Finally we were lucky enough to get an invite from the Mayor (our unit ambassador) to visit the town hall, we were shown lots of photographs of Huntingdon in years gone by. The Mayor also presented our eldest Guide with her Baden-Powell certificate (he presented the BP Trefoil to her while we were in London earlier in the year but the certificate was not ready in time) a photographer from The Hunts Post took a photo and the following week it was published in the newspaper along side a write up of what the award was for and what the Guide had to do to achieve it. |
