Branded Hand's Home Page

This site is dedicated to the memory of Captain Jonathan Walker. In 1844, Captain Walker attempted to assist seven slaves in escaping to the Bahamas. When the goal was in sight, they were caught.

As punishment, Captain Walker was branded on the right hand, at the base of the thumb. The letters "SS" were applied to signify "slave stealer." But, because of a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier, "The Branded Hand," Captain Walker referred to its meaning as "Slave Savior."

The above graphic is the daguerreotype taken of Walker's hand. It appears to be the left hand, but the daguerreotype results in a backward image.

This site is also the site for Walker Family Reunion information. Gradually photos from previous biennial reunions will be posted. Information about the 2002 reunion in Pensacola will also appear on this site.
