Alaska comes from the Alieute Indian word "Alyeska", which means "Great Land" Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959. The U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars ( 2 cents an acre). Alaska is 2 times the size of Texas and 1/5 the size of the continental U.S. Nicknames: "The Last Frontier" and "Land of the Midnight Sun" Largest Cities: Fairbanks and Anchorage Alaska's major industries are oil, fishing, and tourism |

State Seal: The state seal was originally designed in 1910 while Alaska was a territory and not a state. The rays above the mountains represent the Northen Lights. The smelter symbolizes mining. The train stands for Alaska's railroads, and ships denote transportation by sea. The trees symbolize Alaska's wealth of forests, and the farmer, his horse, and the three shocks of wheat represent Alaskan agriculture. The fish and the seals signify the importance of fishing and wildlife to Alaska's economy. |
