Underground Railroad and Freedom Quilts

Activities Before Computer Use:
1. The teacher will give a short lecture the highlights the events that were surrounding the anti slavery movement the preceded the Civil War. 2. The class will discuss The Fugitive Slave Act and the Abolitionist Movement. 3. The student will contrast violent and non violent protests. 4. The students will be asked which side they would have been on had they been living at that time. 5. A copy of “Hidden in Plain View: The Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad” by Jacqueline Tobin would be made available to the students. 6. The students would be broke into groups for the rest of the unit. Activities After Computer Use: 1. After the groups have done their research, they should be allowed to walk around the campus for 20-30 minutes to identify the landmarks that they will use in their freedom map. 2. The students should be able to do a rough sketch of their quilt panels when they return to the classroom. 3. Groups will decide whether to draw and color their quilt sections by hand, or whether to return to the computer and produce them using clip art and drawing programs. 4. Students with digital cameras can photograph landmarks for use in their classroom presentations. Supporting Activities: 1. Students should look in the library for related books about Slavery, Abolition, and individuals who were caught up in this controversy 2. Students should discuss civil disobedience and it’s role today. 3. Student should discuss the pre-civil war economy and whether or not slavery was dying in the south without the need for war. 4. Several classroom discussions should take place throughout this unit, and all of the students should give feedback as they form opinions. Assessment: 1. Assessment should be ongoing throughout the unit. It is usually obvious which groups or individuals are on track and or falling behind. 2. Student need to design appropriate quilt maps. 3. The maps should allow the teacher to reach the assigned objective. 4. The students need to give an oral presentation for a grade that uses the images that they copied into Photosmart. |
