THE X-FACTOR

Within the Marvel Universe, there is a variety of special sub-races that have branched off from humanity, not the least of which are the Eternals and the Deviants.

Now, we all know where the Eternals and Deviants came from, correct? The Celestials made experiments upon the neanderthal men, resulting not only in humans- that's us- but in the cosmically-charged god-like Eternals, and bestial sub-human Deviants, who were cursed with an unstable genetic code, causing each new generation to be more horribly deformed than the last.

The Eternals and Deviants themselves have led to further sub-races:

The one truly anomalous sub-race on Earth is Homo Mermanus- the Atlanteans- who have their own additional sub-race, the Lemurians. The Atlanteans' origin has not yet been revealed.

So, back to the Humans. That's the people who are like you and me. They're a pretty normal bunch, for the most part. They resemble the Eternals physically, but their culture is not as advanced. Without some outside factor, like radioactive spiders or gamma bombs, humans are normal.

Except...

Except for a certain branch of humanity that we call "Mutants". Mutants are born of humans, but from birth possess a..."Deviant" code, called the X-Factor. Like the Deviants, Mutants differ from their parents, occasionally, in a physical manner. There is no apparent rhyme or reason as to why Mutants receive the powers that they do, it seems to be an entirely random process.

There are also many Mutants who have extremely long lifespans, and are immune to most of harm. These Mutants, called Externals, have even been worshipped as gods in the past.

I think you see where I'm heading with this.

It's not a commonly known fact, but during the First Host of the Celestial expeditions, along with creating the Eternals and Deviants outright, the seed for genetic mutation was placed within mankind by the Host. Yes, you read that correctly- the Celestials are responsible for Mutants. It was not until this century, with the advance of the Atomic Age, that Mutants became more prolific in numbers.

So, why did the Celestials give us Mutants, other than to sell lots of X-Men comics? Heck, we don't even know why we got the Eternals and Deviants. But I've got a notion.

When the Fourth Host arrived to judge humanity, there was only thing that ultimately saved the Earth, and that was the Young Gods, twelve young people who together represented man's highest potentional. Their potential was most clearly represented in the superhuman powers each one had been born with. These powers of theirs are undoubtedly the result of Celestial experiments, and I don't think there is truly a great difference between them and Mutants.

I think that the Celestials implanted this random factor of genetic mutation within humanity so as to give them a chance of passing their judgement, and overcome the Deviants, who once had lorded over all humans. After all, when the First Host arrived, they knew that one day they'd return to judge all of mankind, and could probably have forseen exactly how they would have developed. The random factor they inserted provided a degree of uncertainty.

And that's my theory.

For all of you who aren't yet convinced of the similarities between the Eternals and Deviants, here are some examples:

  • The Morlocks-These deformed, outcast Mutants, dwell below ground in their own community, hating those who dwell above. Sound familiar?
  • Cyclops-Occular energy blasts. And where do Eternals project energy 50% of the time? From their eyes.
  • Mystique-Blue-skinned Mutant who can change her appearance. Warlord Kro and Cataphrax posssess similiar powers.
  • Bishop- Able to absorb all kinds of energy, just like an Eternal.
  • The Externals-You can't kill them. They live forever. Men worship them as gods. What do you think?
  • Exodus- This Mutant's powers are vast, and include energy projection, teleportation, flight, and a long lifespan. This combination is unusual for Mutants, but common for Eternals.
Got anything to add or comment on? Let me know.
