Camp at Haliburton, Ontario - Samac Adventure Base
Nothing beats a weiner roasted over an open fire. This is something that
can only be done in the woods. Despite wet wood, it wasn't that difficult
to light. After the flames die down, the red hot coals provide an ideal cooking
fire.
Even older youth in the Scouting enjoy getting out to the woods to seek camping
and woodsman activities. There is always something new to learn as well.
Samac Adventure Base provides Scouting members with a retreat in the heart
of the Canadian Shield amongst white pines, rocks and numerous small lakes.
The campsite itself is approximately 1 square mile of mixed forest, with
challenging hills and seldom used trails. The adjacent Two Islands
Lake offers swimming, canoeing and sail boarding.
Campsite buildings are used for day camps in summer and are rented out to
Scouting groups in winter. On site are a Ranger's Cabin, Trading Post
(housing 28 youth and adults in winter), and Cheeman Cabin (housing 12 youth
and adults in winter). All buildings have wood stove heating, electricity,
fridge and stove. No running water means you must bring your own or
treat lake water. Portable-type toilets are available in the center
of the campsite.
The cabin is situated about 1 km from the Kennaway Road about 13 kms east
of the Village of Haliburton. Bunks for 24 campers (Trading Post building)
provide a warm and cosy retreat in the winter months. The cabin is well apointed
with wood stove heat and electric lights.
Separate rooms are available for female youth and adults in the same building.
Patience and a small “coals” fire works the best when roasting meat (if you
can call a weiner meat.) Roasting sticks were obtained.
Camping at this site is particularily good in winter since snow accumulations
can provide for challenging winter sports, hiking, shelter building, sledding,
etc.
