One Dark and Rainy Night
It was inevitable that one day she would die. Everyone died eventually. But she had never imagined it would be sudden like this: a rainy, dark night, the brakes of the news van failing, being thrown out the windshield like a rag doll. And then the darkness.
But the darkness ended and suddenly she lived again. She was covered in blood and dirt and gravel from rolling on the road, and one of her shoes was missing. She stood up, hobbling a little without the shoe and looked back. The cameraman was dead, too, skewered through with a tree branch where they had rammed into the cliff side.
Headlights. A familiar black car, the top up for once. Her head felt like it was about to explode. Maybe she hadn’t died. Maybe she was lucky and she just had a really bad concussion. The driver emerged and their eyes locked on one another – and the headache faded. The man walked up to her and gave her a rueful smile.
"You always wanted to know what secret organization I belonged to," said MacLeod. "Well, you just officially became a member. Welcome to the Game, Randi McFarland."
