Dawn sat on the couch with the black-clad vampire.

"God, Mom, don't you get it? How are we supposed to live like this?"

Joyce fought her tears. "Buffy, I've tried. I don’t enjoy putting my girls in danger."

"Then fight it, Mom. Don’t do this."

"Buffy, I've tried. But into each generation a woman is born, with the strength and skill to hunt vampires and save the world. I'm the Slayer. And there’s a world to save."

Joyce sighed. "Come on, Ripper," she said to the vampire, "Let's save your precious Happy Meals with legs."

They disappeared into the night.
