Small Red Whisp Damselfly - Agriocnemis rubescens

FAMILY COENAGRIONIDAE

This page contains information and pictures about Small Red Whisp Damselflies that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Body length 25mm, male

This is a very tiny damselfly. It is pale black in colour with some pale red under the abdomen. We saw them once feeding on tiny mosquitoes.

Body length 25mm, female

The female is the same size as male with lighter colours. We sometimes find them hiding within the grasses along Bulimba Creek, where is a fast running small creek with small ponds in between.  The damselflies don't mind if our camera came very close. If disturbed, they fly slowly to next spot about one meter away.
