Troop 789's Been Here and Done This

When Where What
Jan '99 Afton Canyon Mountain biking, exploring a cave-like canyon and sitting under the train tracks.
Feb '99 South Fork Campground A hike into Devils Punchbowl, working on Scout skills and advancement.
Mar '99 Joshua Tree Nationak Park North entrance to Sheep's Pass, backpacker 14-miles to meet rest of the Troop for boulder hopping at Sheep's Pass, Star Party with big telescopes, used compass and walkie talkies to meet a couple of miles out in the open desert.
Apr '99 Holcomb Valley Scout Camp Totin' Chip, Camp Service Project, pine cone baseball and new Scout skills. Woke up Saturday morning to 1 1/2" of snow on the ground.
May '99 Hoagee Trail Camp Backpacker in the Santa Anita Canyon. Younger Scouts met High Adventure Team on Saturday then all hiked out on Sunday.
June '99 Little Jimmy Trail Camp Backpacker in the San Gabriel Mountains. Younger Scouts hiked in from Islip Saddle and met High Adventure Team on Saturday. The High Adventure team left early Sunday morning for another 10 mile hike out, over Mt. Baden Powell. Younger Scouts hiked out the way they came in, on Sunday.
Aug '99 Camp John Mensinger Summer Camp in the Stanislaus National Forest. This camp was lots of fun, dusty and lots of walking, but fun. About 20 Scouts earned 63 merit badges. We also sent 5 Scouts to high-adventure.
Aug '99 Mt Whitney Several Scouts trained for this 53-mile hike to the highest point in the lower 48 states. Because of injuries and getting sick before the hike, only one Scout, Danny Kuo, along with a couple of leaders, actually made it on this hike.
Sept '99 Firestone Scout Reservation Junior Leader Training, skills refresher and Court of Honor. The weather was great, the Scouts got lots of awards, mostly from summer camp. The ground was so hard, that it was even hard to drive steel spikes in the ground. We were even visited by racoon and a pack of coyotes on the first night.
Oct '99 Lake Casitas The idea was to go and have fun, fish, relax, fish, eat and fish. All was done, but no fish were caught, maybe because of the earthquake that morning in Joshua Tree. The Scouts did have a good time, even without any fish.
Nov '99 Camp Verdugo Oaks Webelos/Scout Weekend campout near Magic Mountain. There were 46 Webelos Scouts and parents at this event. We hope that the Scouts learned something about what Boy Scouts is all about. The weather was cold and it rained, but I think that they had a good time.
Dec '99 Rainbow Canyon We went to a campground near Barstow. Nearby was a cave with some neat pertoglyphs. There was a little rain, but it got soaked up real fast because the ground was so dry.
