HEXANCHIFORMES
(SIXGILL, SEVENGILL, AND FRILLED SHARKS)
Hexanchiformes are sharks that have a single spineless dorsal fin, six or seven pairs of gill openings (most sharks have only five) and an anal fin.  This group contains two families - frilled sharks (family Chlamydoselachidae), and sixgill and sevengill sharks (family Hexanchidae).  There are five described species and perhaps another two yet to be positively identified.  Theese sharks are worldwide in their distribution and occur mostly in deepwater locations.  Members of this group are ovovivipaous live-bearers - the young hatch from eggs within the female's body.
