LAMNIFORMES
(MACKEREL SHARKS)
Lamniformes, known as mackerel sharks, comprise seven families and 15 or 16 species.

They are found throughout the world, except in the coldest seas.  They range from intertidal to depths of more than 4,000 feet (1,200 m), and from the surf line to the great ocean basins.

Most mackerel sharks have elongated snouts, long mouths, an anal fin and two spineless dorsal fins.

Theses ovoviviparous sharks share with some others a form of uterine cannibalism: before birth, embryo sharks feed on their younger siblings and fertilized eggs.
