Adventures of the NC ALRA |
The
following photographs depict some of the adventures the members and friends of the
North Carolina group of the American
Long Rifle Association (ALRA), organized as “McDowell’s Company, Rowan County Militia” have taken over the
last several years. The
NC-ALRA depicts the general time-frame of 1750 to 1790, with particular
interest in the 1760 to 1775 period.
While the National ALRA time-frame covers 1750 to 1815, the NC group
has decided to concentrate on the time of early westward expansion along
frontier North Carolina, with a specific focus of representing a survey
group. This specific focus provides
many opportunities for adventure in a variety of settings. Also, being organized as a “militia
company” provides us the opportunity to participate in selected reenactments
and first-person scenarios where the frontier militia company organization is
the proper setting. While
we visit and participate in various demonstrations and activities at
encampments and historic sites, our real passion is to be in the woods. The
NC group especially enjoys scouts in the Linville Gorge area of western Burke
County, NC. The Gorge provides a
fantastic backdrop for scouts by challenging one’s abilities and resources. And, with its historical significance
(William and John Linville were killed by the Cherokee there in 1766),
provides our group with a multitude of possibilities for historical-based
scenarios. The
most recent outings are highlighted on this page. Following pages have a collection of some
of the more memorable trips (that we were fortunate enough to have along a
camera to record). |
