Movie Reviews (Personal and Rotten Tomatoes.com 60% is good)
"Hilary and Jackie" 1998 - REVIEW: 10/10 RT:82%
Emily Watson's career performance, portrays two sisters who share an inseperable bond, to the death.
"The Boxer" 1997 - REVIEW: 7/10
A story about the forbidden love between a boxer and his lover before he went to jail. Set in an Irish world of despair. The film doesn't pertain to Watson's theme, average.
"Trixie" 2000 - REVIEW: 8/10
Emily Watson plays a savant idiot with hopes of becoming a private eye, her performance is amazing, but the supporting character's were very bad, detracted from the movie.
"The Luzhin Defence" 2000 - REVIEW: 10/10 RT: 58%
My favorite Emily Watson movie. She is in her prime in this role, the subdued yet hidden with determined emotions that she lets out in scenes of masterpiece proportions. John Turturro is one of the few actors who actually look good on screen with Emily. Great movie that was somewhat overlooked
"Gosford Park" 2001 - REVIEW: 8/10 RT: 90%
Although Emily Watson could not steal the stage for this movie, it was because she was being rather experimental, as her character was a dusty attitude mixed with a nonchalanted flair. She is part of an awesome ensemble cast with my favorite in this brilliant movie, Maggie Smith.
"Cradle Will Rock" 2000 - REVIEW: 9/10
Time Robbins delightful comedy/drama about a stage production in a time of depression in America. It deals with censorship and expression. Emily Watson plays a very good role, she wasn't the most emotional one, regrettably, but her colleague, John Turturro, puts on another grand performance. Only hindered by the whole Bill Murray episode, which was undelightfully boring.
"Angelas Ashes" 2000 - REVIEW: 9/10
If "Hilary and Jackie" was Emily Watson's Best Actress role, then her character in "Angela's Ashes" should be best supporting character, Watson plays Angela (From the title) who's a mother who see's her children growing up in poverty-stricken Ireland. She never has a climatic moment where she lets loose, but her image alone was effective enough.
"Red Dragon" 2002 - REVIEW: 9/10
Its nice to see Ms. Watson experiment with roles, but unlike the ill-fated movie "Equilibrium", "Red Dragon" succeeds. Watson plays the blind woman Reba, who falls in love with a Serial killer and in the entire movie, she's the only one who brought a human side to him. Emily Watson alone turned Red Dragon into a half psychotic serial killer manhunt story, half love story, I was going to give it a 8, but decided that her ability to do that to such a cult classic like the Hannibal Lector trilogy deserves bravo
"Breaking the Waves" 1996 - 10/10
Amazing. I watched this movie not knowing what to expect besides a rivetting performance from Emily Watson being this was her debut role where she won an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Everything from the documentary style shooting, the peaceful "chapter" interludes, to the raw style of Emily Watson that is unlike her later films. This movie plays a very strong bond between Bessie (Watson) who is emotionally unstable and has almost no will of her own and her sister in law, who is very controlled and sensible. One almost wonders whether this is "Hilary and Jackie", the sequel. Emily Watson is extremely powerful in this movie, as she does things that shocked me, her nude body was displayed all over this lust-filled movie, and it displays an adequately disturbing image. Sadly, Emily Watson's early movies had savage sex scenes rather than the subtle, passionate sex scenes of her later movies, but it was still a joy to watch (Non perversely of course). I had a quip about the ending, where the husband, who forced Bessie to sleep with multiple men just for the sex and eventually sacrifice herself and her beliefs for him, who is paralyzed from a coma. The husband is displayed almost sympathetically to the audience, who has a negative image of him throughout the entire movie, it makes it seem like Steven Spielberg came in and slapped a happy ending on the movie. This movie was simply amazing, it captured Ms. Watson's beauty so wonderfully that one can't help but think about it days on end after you watch it. A tad long for the impatients, but definitely a debut worthy of such a high caliber actress. I can't stress this enough, watch this tragic masterpiece of a movie.

Quotes
"I'm lucky I don't do the kind of work where the main thing is that you're the girl and you look gorgeous. I don't look like that. I'm a funny-looking bugger. I don't feel that I can compete, and I wouldn't want to. Life's too short to spend seven hours a day in the gym and starving yourself."
"I was a normal, rather dutiful child. I didn't even rebel as a teenager."
"The first experience of Cannes, the first time I was here, is like seared in my brain like a firebrand. It was very intense. I remember as the light went down, someone leaned over and said, "Emily your life is about to change forever."
"People think of me as such a serious actress, but I find myself behaving like a gadabout."
