PART 4
Technical Preparation of the Urban Guerrilla

Each urban guerrilla must pay special attention to technical preparation. Technical preparation involves physical conditioning, and the study and practice of all kinds of skills, particularly manual skills.

The urban guerrilla must keep in good physical shape if he is to withstand the strain of his work. To be a warrior, he must learn and practice the art of warfare. So the urban guerrilla must learn the various forms of warfare, from the attack to hand-to-hand defense.

To be prepared physically, the urban guerrilla must hike for many miles, be able to set up a camp, and learn the technique of personal survival in the wilds. He must become proficient in mountain climbing, rowing, swimming, skin diving, scuba diving, fishing, spear fishing, and in hunting and trapping large birds, and small and big game.

It is also important for the urban guerrilla to learn to drive a car or truck, to pilot an airplane, and operate a motorboat or sail a boat. He should know engine mechanics, radio operation, telephone tapping, the electric components used in setting timers, and have a broad knowledge of all electronics.

No less important is the guerrilla's need to know topography and navigation. He must be able to locate his position by instrumentation, or on a map, to calculate exact distances, know cartography, draw maps and plans to scale, shoot an azimuth, and be proficient with protractors and compasses.

Important too is a working knowledge of chemistry, including the blending of colors. He must be able to forge stamps, and practice forgery so that he can copy letters and make up false documents. It is only in this way that the urban guerrilla can exist and function in a society that he seeks to destroy.

The urban guerrilla must also become proficient in medical skills, gaining a basic understanding in the elements of medicine, nursing, pharmacology, the use of drugs, minor surgery, and emergency first aid.

The most basic of all urban guerrilla proficiencies still remains in the use of weapons. The urban guerrilla must become familiar with the use of automatic weapons, pistols, machine guns, various types of shotguns, carbines, mortars, and bazookas. He must know the types of ammunition and the proper employment of explosives. Dynamite, of all explosives, is the most frequently used and must be understood in detail. The use of incendiary bombs, smoke bombs, and other types of explosive devices is indispensable. The guerrilla must know how to use these weapons before he steals them.

Additionally, the urban guerrilla must know how to make Molotov cocktails, grenades, mines, homemade explosive devices, and how to blow up bridges, tear up and destroy railroad tracks, and engage in sabotage. Proficiency in these forms of attack can not be underestimated.

Technical proficiency is the most important feature in urban guerrilla training. Only the trained and experienced guerrilla can prove himself under fire. Only the trained and experienced guerrilla can gain victory.
