Chapter 1

Catlyn glanced up from the Red Hot Chili Pepper's article she was reading to see what Kyndall was doing. Sighing, she turned back to her magazine. A few minutes later, she peeked over the top of the magazine again. Kyndall was deeply engrossed in her romance novel, paying no attention to the restlessness of her friend. Unable to take any more of being cooped up in the apartment, Catlyn tossed her magazine on the table in annoyance. "ARGH!! I'm bored!" she complained.

"Well, what would you like to do?" Kyndall asked calmly turning the page as she continued to read.

"I don't know," Catlyn whined. She made a perfect picture of frustration. Elbows resting on her knees, hands on her face, fingers tangled in her hair, an expression of exasperation on her face. "Downtown Disney. Maybe Pleasure Island. Gotta be something interesting going on there," she murmured jumping up and going to her room.

Kyndall looked up from her book, watching Catlyn walk down the hall. "Glad we could agree on that," she mumbled, slamming her book shut in irritation.

An hour later, the girls were in Catlyn's black Mustang convertible speeding down I-4 to Orlando. "Ya know," Kyndall said looking at the stereo. "I truly believe she is incapable of singing any other tune."

Catlyn laughed. "But she can dance."

"And apparently that's enough to be labeled "The Pop Princess"," Kyndall said making a face.

"Ahh…c'mon Kyn. Ya know ya like her," Catlyn teased as she began singing along with Britney.

o~/Oops I did it again/I played with your heart/Got lost in the game/Oh Baby baby/Oops You think I'm in love/That I'm sent from above/But I'm not that innocent/~o

"I don't know what frightens me more," Kyndall said staring at Catlyn in horror. "The fact that you know all the words to this god awful noise, or the fact that you know the dance so well that you can do it as you drive a stick shift."

Catlyn laughed. "Isn't it cool?"

"I wouldn't go THAT far, no," Kyndall shook her head. "You are so odd."

"Ooooh. Blink!!" Catlyn squealed turning up the radio.

"From Britney to Blink 182. Darlin, you truly amaze me," Kyndall rolled her eyes.

"Hehe. Gotta love XL 106.7," Catlyn grinned.

"Isn't that the station that -"

"Oh hey, did you know that they're building this huge ass mall on 95 close to Vero Beach?" Catlyn interrupted.

"Ummm…no. How huge are we talking?"

"Massive like 500 stores or something. At least that's what I've heard anyway. It was in the paper," Catlyn said, silently thanking whatever deity just rescued them from the emotional journey they would have embarked on had Kyndall been able to finish her thought.

Before Kyndall had moved to Florida a few weeks ago, she had spent months getting over a serious attachment to AJ McLean, the wild man of the well-known pop/R&B group the Backstreet Boys. He had become something of an obsession to her. Her every thought, her every dream, her every conversation centered around him. He was all she had ever wanted in a man. Never mind that he came from four states away, but was anywhere from 100 to tens of thousands of miles away from her at any given time. Never mind that he didn't have a clue who she was. Never mind that she had about a one in a million trillion chance of ever meeting him. Never mind that he had a girlfriend that he seemed to be wholly and solely in love with. She had fallen for him. Hard. The fact that he was in a famous music group was second to the guy that he was. Or what she knew of him anyway. His fame was just a convenience, something that had brought him to her attention; something that she forgot when he took off those dark glasses that hid the eyes that could hypnotized her in an instance.

And so in support of her best friend's need to get over AJ, Catlyn had put away everything she had that had anything to do with them. Not that she wasn't addicted in her own way, but her obsession didn't bother her the way it did Kyndall. When Kyndall came to visit a couple of months ago, that was when Catlyn had gone on her BSB purge. Cleaning out her apartment, hoping to be able to help Kyndall some. But most of the time Kyndall was there for her visit, she talked about AJ. Almost as if she needed to. And so Catlyn sat and talked with her about him. By the time Kyndall went back home to pack up her stuff for her move, she had decided that she definitely needed a permanent break from the Backstreet Boys.

Now anytime the subject came up, Catlyn would do her best to change it. Sometimes it didn't work that way, but it was getting better. And Kyndall had only been living there for a few weeks. Things were looking up. Catlyn just hoped that they could find a decent guy here in Florida so that her friend wouldn't be so lonely.
