Chapter 29

Catlyn sighed as the phone rang for what seemed like the millionth time that hour. Looking at the caller ID box, she rolled her eyes. "Look AJ. She doesn't want or need to talk to you. Quit calling," she said as she picked up the phone.

"But I really need to talk to her. Look, I'm sorry about last night."

"Yeah. So am I, so's Howie, so's she. The whole world is sorry about it. Now just do us all a favor and leave her alone," she said hanging up the phone. She shook her head. Why didn't he get the point that he should just give up. He'd already done the damage. Why couldn't he just let her get on with her life. As hard as that might be for her right now, Catlyn knew that is what Kyndall needed to do.

Turning back to her computer, she was just about to start work on her project when the phone rang again. "If that is AJ, I swear I'm going to murder him," she mumbled glancing at the box. "Thank you GOD!" she exclaimed. "Hey there," she answered.

"Hey," Nick replied. "What's up?"

Catlyn sighed. "My best friend's heart has been shattered and there's nothing I can do to fix it. I haven't really slept in 24 hours so I feel like shit. My phone hasn't stopped ringing since like 8:30 this morning and it's now," she glanced at her watch, "1:00 in the afternoon. And I'm never going to get this page done."

"Wow. Busy day. What's up with Kyndall?" he asked.

"AJ," Catlyn said simply.

"Oh. He screw things up again?"

Catlyn gave him a brief run-down of what had happened yesterday. She didn't go into detail, thinking it better if some things were left unspoken, but she gave him a general synopsis. "And so now, he's calling every 5 minutes to try to talk to her."

"Wow," Nick said softly.

Catlyn nodded. "Yup. So, that's my life since I've last seen you. What's up with you?"

Nick laughed quietly. "Nothing near as exciting. I came home and got grilled by Crys about my day. When she found out I'd been hanging out with you, she went off. She left for a couple of hours last night. When she came back, I was asleep. That pissed her off," he chuckled.

"The concerned boyfriend. Gotta love em," Catlyn teased.

"I was tired," he said defending himself.

Catlyn shook her head. "You're pathetic," she said laughing. "So, did ya'll make up?"

"Yeah, I guess. She's not talking to me a whole lot right now. She's outside swimming laps I think."

"So you thought you'd call and share this with me why?"

He shrugged. "I don't know, I was bored."

"Oh gee, don't I feel special?"

Kyndall awoke slowly, her eyes barely opening and her head killing her. She leaned up on her elbow and glanced at the clock. She shook her head as she realized what time it was. Suddenly events of the previous night came crashing back to her, and she collapsed back onto the bed. She could hear Catlyn talking to someone on the telephone out in the front room. She listened for a few seconds realizing it was Nick she was talking to. She wondered for a moment if AJ had called, but she soon was scolding herself for even thinking of him at all.

She laid in bed for another fifteen minutes pondering if it was worth the effort to bother getting up. But realizing her problems weren't going to go away even if she hid in her room for the rest of her life, she decided to move. Sitting up slowly, Kyndall swung her legs over the side of the bed and sat staring at the floor. Sighing heavily, she walked to the door turning the knob slowly. As she opened it to step into the hall, a feeling of hopelessness washed over her and she sank to the floor crying.

Catlyn heard Kyndall's door open as she hung up the phone with Nick. Kyndall never came in the front room, so Catlyn peeked down the hall. Her door was open a couple of inches, and she could see Kyndall sitting on the floor. Walking to her room, Catlyn pushed the door open and seen her friend sitting on the floor crying. Kneeling down next to her, Catlyn wrapped her arms around her. "Shh," she said softly. "Shhh."

"I…I don't understand," Kyndall whispered. "What did I do wrong?"

"Nothing sweetie," Catlyn said rubbing her back softly. "You did nothing wrong."

"Then why doesn't he want me. Why does he keep going back to her? Am I not good enough for him?"

"You are more than good enough for him. You deserve so much better than him."

"I don't want anyone better than him," Kyndall mumbled. "I want him."

"I know you do sweetie. I know you do."

"I just can't live with this anymore," she shook her head. "I can't be with him if he's just going to keep going back to her."

"I don't blame you," Catlyn said. "I wouldn't either."

"But why does it hurt so much?" Kyndall cried softly.

"That is all love is," Catlyn murmured. "One big heartache."

"Thanks Cat," Kyndall smiled half-heartedly. "Knew I could count on you for the uplifting advice." She looked over at Catlyn as the phone rang again.

Catlyn sighed and stood up. "I'll get it. I have a feeling I know who it is," she grumbled as she walked out to hang up on AJ for the umpteenth time that day.
