PIONEER CARROLL COUNTY RESIDENT DIED LAST MONDAY
Herman Dopheide, prominent in Catholic circles, passed into beyond. FUNERAL HELD TODAY Had been ill for several years, though not seriously so until a short time before his death.
Herman Dopheide, a prominent man of this city, died at his home October 19, after an illness of several year, hemiplegia being the cause of his death.
Herman Dopheide was born Nov. 14, 1859, in Ankum Osnabrueck, Hanover, Germany and when nine years old came to America with his parents and settled in Dubuque County, Iowa, near Floberg (now Luxemberg.) Four years later, in 1872, when he was 13 years old, he moved with his parents to Carroll County, Iowa and lived on a farm six miles south of Carroll in Roselle township. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Carroll County and helped to break up a lot of the prairie and to build up what are now the fertile fields of the county.
He was married Feb. 21, 1882, to Bernadina Stallman and settled on a farm near Templeton where he resided for 53 years. This union was blessed with 13 children, 13 of whom are living and who were at his bedside at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife and the following children: Henry B. Dopheide, J.B. Dopheide, Mrs. Paul Miller, all of Carroll; Mrs. J.J. Friedman, Ogallala, Neb.; E.B. Dopheide, Norfolk, Neb.; Mrs. Wm. O'Connor, Omaha, Neb.; George F. Dopheide, Orient, Iowa; Anna Dopheide, Breda, Iowa; Elizabeth Johanna, Theresa and Irene Dopheide at home. One son, Theodore, died when about five years old while living on the farm in Eden Township.
He retired from the farm Mar. 1, 1918, and moved to Carroll where he lived until the time of his death. The deceased was 65 years, 11 months and 5 days old.
He was a member of the Holy Name society of S.S. Peter and Paul's Church, Carroll.
Funeral services were held from the SS Peter and Paul's church this morning at 9 o'clock. The solemn requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. Ocken and Rev. Warzawa, Interment was made at SS Peter and Paul's cemetery
Bernadina's obit
Mrs. Herman Dopheide of this city, mother of J.B. Dopheide, well-known abstractor and insurance man, died at her home at 126 South Walnut Street Saturday night, July 27, 1929, at 11:35 o'clock.
Mrs. Dopheide underwent an operation at the St. Anthony Hospital June 21 and spent a month in the hospital following the ordeal. Ten days ago she was taken to her home and apparently was getting along nicely. Saturday afternoon she sat up part of the time and spent a little while on the back porch, looking at her garden. About 6:30 in the evening she was taken with terrific pain and was in great distress until she was relieved by death. The last half hour before her passing she became unconscious and remained in that condition until the end.
Mrs. Dopheide, as Bernardina Stallman, was born at Baken Vechta, Oldenburg, Germany, Jan. 21, 1864. When 14 years of age she came to America with her mother and sister, Mrs. Frank Kerkhoff. A cousin, Mrs. J.J. Heller, also accompanied them. They came directly to Carroll County where they located on a farm near Templeton.
Mrs. Dopheide had been in this country but four years when her marriage to Herman Dopheide took place on Feb. 21, 1882. The young couple located four miles northeast of Templeton. In 1902, the family moved to Murray County, Minn., where they lived on a farm four years. They then returned to a farm one-half mile southeast of Templeton where they resided until eleven years ago at which time they bought a beautiful home in Carroll and moved to this city.
Mrs. Dopheide was prominent in the SS Peter and Paul's Catholic Church circles and in the rosary sodality. She was a devout Catholic and fully fortified with the last Sacraments. She was an energetic, ambitious woman; a great lover of her home and derived much pleasure from the companionship of her children.
Of the 13 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Dopheide, 12 are living: Theodore, the third eldest in the family, died when five years old. The surviving are: Henry B. Dopheide, J.B. Dopheide, Mrs. Paul Mueller, Johanna Dopheide and Theresa Dopheide, all of Carroll; Mrs. J.J. Friedman, Ogalalla, Neb.; George F. Dopheide, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. C.J. Polking, Breda; Elizabeth Dopheide, E.B. Dopheide, Mrs. William O'Conner and Irene Dopheide, Omaha. Mr. Dopheide died in this city July 19, 1925.
Three brothers also survive: Clem Stallman, Carroll; T.P. Stallman, Ashton, and Henry Stallman, Oskaloosa. Another brother, Bernard Stallman, died many years ago and the sister, Mrs. Frank Kerkhoff, died Nov. 2, 1925.
Funeral services were held at the SS Peter and Paul's church Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock Rev. L. Schenkelberg was in charge of the requiem mass. All the children were present with the exception of George who was prevented from coming because of illness in the family.
Bült and Dopheide Information
Wed, 16 Mar 2005 19:40:26 -0800
Dear Barbara,
Somehow I lost you over the New Year holiday. I sent a response message and
it bounced, so it was back to square one for me.
I contacted you about information on Katherina Bült/Buelt, who married
Herman Dopheide. I have made a file with the ancestors of Katherina Bült/Buelt for you.
Please use my cousin Rita Hogan's book as your reference, because I have not
been able to research all of the dates from Germany yet. The citation is listed at the
end of the file. I think Rita worked with a German researcher to get her information.
You asked if I had a web site and I do, but it's not for Buelt's -- it's
for Neiland and I think you already have a link to http://nieland.our-kin.com/ We have
a lot of research interests in common.
Anna Berning, sister to Maria Anna Berning Schelle, was the first wife of my great grandfather, Henry Nieland (1854-1949). And there are some Wittrocks in that bunch too. You and I are digging for roots in the same
sources!
