Dedicated to my mother and sister who chase the darkness away. Archive Date: 2/24/2001, originally written in 1988 It was maddeningly close, she thought, as she raced wildly through the deserted alley. She ran faster. With a backwards glance, she saw it bearing down on her, its enormous yellow teeth gleaming in anticipation of the kill. "It musn't catch up with me," she prayed. The alley seemed endless. A nearby building with its side door ajar, beckoned. She passed through the door quickly, pausing for a split second to regain her breath. As she entered the building, near darkness assaulted her. Her fear multiplied, becoming a dead weight and sapping her strength. Blindly she looked about, trying to see through the darkness. Ah, a tiny crack of light filtered through from somewhere. It lit upon a flight of stairs. She ran towards it and skipped up its steps hurriedly. The stairs led to a deserted floor. Glancing around, she saw a door at the far end of the floor. She ran towards it, opening it jerkily, preparing to step through it. But there was nothing on the other side of the door but the ground far, far below. She backed up and closed the door. Whipping around nervously, she found her enemy a few feet away from her. Its teeth were bared and it gave a ferocious growl. She reached out to grip the door handle, preparing to take her chances on the other side. Her nemesis charged forth, coming at her in a blur of color and motion. She barely had time to fling the door open before her enemy threw itself on her. The sudden weight of her foe collapsing on top of her made her lose her balance and together, they fell towards the ground below. As they were descending, she looked in horror as her enemy, an evil looking boar, opened its mouth and ... She woke up with a start, her breath coming in deep gasps.
