I'm just borrowing her for a few moments and giving her back right back. No infringement intended. Archive Date: 2/23/2002 Sometimes it feels like they're your only friends. Your knives, your guns, the Firestar and the Browning, your cross. Sharp, powerful and deadly, they're a testament of your ultimate faith. Unlike your motley assortment of lovers and pack followers, they're the ones you count on. They don't rail at you to become more human, accuse you of becoming more monster. They don't look at you as though you were some prize, some puppet to be used for personal gain. They don't look at you with fear, as though you were some strange freak of nature. They don't burden you with expectation, with the knowlegde that you and *only* you can save them. They simply hang about your person, fitting you like a glove. Becoming part of you until you forget there was a time when you didn't carry them, when you didn't need them. When you weren't this *thing*, this *Anita Blake*, vampire executioner, master necromancer and all-around scourge of the unholy, the undead, the unclean. You pat yourself down, making sure they're tucked in all the right places, that you can get to them when needed. They always are. The routine is simply that. Routine. You know they'll be there. Just as much as you know you'll use them when the time and the situation calls for it. These days, those times and situations happen more frequently than not. You keep introducing your friends to more power-hungry monsters, more supernatural entities, more corrupted humans. Your friends do their job. Hurt, maim, dismember. You do yours. Kill or be killed. They're the only ones you can really count on. Besides yourself. -End- HOME MISCELLANEOUS FICTION FAN FICTION |
