PREMISE: Three aliens survive the 1947 spaceship crash in Roswell, New Mexico and assimilate into human society. They grow up to be regular human teens with nifty powers and no real knowledge of their alien heritage. No one knows of their alien identity until one fateful day when Max Evans, the leader of the alien trio, uses his powers to save the life of Liz Parker, a girl he has been secretly in love with for most of his young life. After Liz confronts her savior, she learns that Isabel, Max's sister and Michael, their best friend are also aliens. These facts are disseminated back to Maria, Liz's best friend and Alex, Liz and Maria's friend. From then on, fear of discovery motivates the alien trio (and their human friends) to keep their identity a secret from the suspicious town sheriff, a band of FBI alien hunters and evil aliens. Further exploration of their alien heritage becomes a priority as they encounter Tess, another alien and Nasedo, her alien guardian. Both newcomers bring questions surface about the aliens' true destiny. WHAT'S THE ATTRACTION? Show: The premise of aliens living on Earth has been debated long before this show aired. This show presented that concept in a new, unique twist: teen aliens going through identity crisis known as adolescent angst! In lesser skilled hands, the concept could have suffered with cheesy or over-the-top routines but the writers deftly managed to balance intriguing science fiction and intense drama. The inventive science fiction sends the imagination skittering in so many different directions and keeps the viewer guessing. Characters: To me, the characters represent archetypal emotions and ideals found within. Max represents love, the unconditional emotion that risks, gives, becomes everything. Liz carries innocence, the unquestioning ally of love and truth. Maria is trust, the open hand that stays open when another joins with it while Michael is doubt, the eternal question that spurs discovery from within. Isabel represents beauty, the perpetual light that shines and Alex constancy, the rock-steady element that grounds us all. Sheriff is concern, the father figure that follows in the wake of shadows, Kyle blissful ignorance, the wild card that pops up from time to time. Nacedo represents single-pointedness, the unerring light that focuses on one task, Tess tradition, the compuction to do what we have been programmed to do and the alien hunters, destructive fear, always ready to smash anything out of its realm of control.
