DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
DEACONS (1)
- must disclose fully and promptly the nature and extent of the directly or indirectly interested in a proposed contract or transaction with the society to each of the other directors in writing as set out as Sections 120 and 123 of the Company Act and Sections 27 and 28 of the Society Act. (2)
- shall appoint the candidate of the previous year's election with the next highest vote to be deacon in the event that there is less than nine or the prescribed number of deacons. The board may appoint other member to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term if the list of candidates is exhausted. (3)
- shall elect amongst board members, from time to time, a vice-chairman, a secretary, a treasurer, and a financial secretary. (4)
- shall admit and review membership. (5)
- shall appointed co-ordinators and whose term of office shall be determined by the board. (6)
- shall receive reports from departments at lease once every six months. (7)
- shall recommend at each annual general meeting to appoint the auditor to hold office until the close of the next annual general meeting, and if at that meeting an appointment is not made, the auditor in office continues as auditor until a successor is appointed. An auditor shall be promptly informed in writing of his or her appointment or removal. (8)
- shall fill a vacancy in the office of auditor created by resignation, death or otherwise. (9)
- shall determine and review from time to time pastoral relations, remuneration, vacation, and other matters regarding the service of the pastor and the pastoral staff. (10)
- shall pursuant to a resolution of the board for convening all general meetings. (11)
- shall hold an annual general meeting in March. During such meeting, the board shall present reports. (12)
- shall create a deacon nominating committee in September or October of each year. The committee shall be dissolved upon completion of the elections. (13)
- shall hold an annual election meeting in November or December. (14)
- shall convene a board meeting at least once every month. The chairperson presiding over a meeting shall appoint a deacon to act as secretary for that meeting in the absence of the secretary from a meeting. (15)
- may appoint departmental members. (16)
- may enter into and execution of contracts for the church, except borrowing, by board resolutions. (17)
- may decide the formation of broad and general policies regarding the operation of this church. (18)
- shall assume their duties as deacons on the first day of January of the year following that election hold. Any deacon elected at a meeting other than the annual elections meeting shall assume his duties as deacon immediately.
- shall lead a life that maintains a consistent and radiant Christian testimony.
- shall regularly attend Sunday services, Holy Communion services, board meetings and other meetings held at this church.
- shall assist in the proper functioning of various departments.
- shall minister faithfully to the members.
- shall maintain the unity of this church.
- shall make the appointment of the pastor.
- shall delegate all or part of the pastor's duties to such person or persons as it may determine in the event of a vacancy in the office of the pastor. (19)
- shall serve until the end of the calendar year or until new deacons have been duly elected to take office, whichever is later. (20)
- may be removed from office and discharged of his duties as deacon by a resolution of the board if he has been absent from all board meetings for a period of not less than three months, or he has been sanctioned pursuant to the Bylaws.
- may recommend a general meeting to remove the senior pastor. (21)

The Qualifications for a Nominee of Deacon Candidate

Nomination of candidates may be sponsored by the signatures of three members. Such nomination shall be subject to the examination and acceptance of the Nominating Committee. (Bylaws E5d & E5e)
- A member does not qualify as a candidate for deacon if he or she is:
(a) a deacon who serves in his or her third consecutive term; or (Bylaw E2f)
(b) the pastor. (Bylaw E5f)
- A member may qualify as a candidate for deacon provided that he or she:
(a) satisfies all requirements as set out in the following portions of Scriptures:
Acts 4:23, 6:3; Romans 12:9-11; I Corinthians 12:24; II Corinthians 8:22; and
I Timothy 3:1-13;
(b) has attained the age of twenty-five years; and
(c) satisfies all eligibility criteria as stipulated by the church board:
(i) is a member in good standing, and has served in this church for more than 2 years;
(ii) if married, candidate's spouse must be a born again Christian and has been baptised;
(iii) regularly attends church services, is concerned with the church's ministries, and is willing to serve the Lord with others in one accord; and
(iv) gives faithfully and exemplarity. (Bylaw E2g)
