Ahh? I look fondly back to last fall when I had never heard of her before. Now it seems like her name and face is all I hear. On every teen magazine her face is plastered, as if to say "Look at us! We?re badass punks too! We can relate to your teenage problems!" Most kids supporting the punk movement don?t know the least thing about it. I see so many kids wearing pins with the anarchy symbol, but ask them what it means, and they couldn?t tell you. They just think its cool because they saw it spray painted on some bathroom wall.
Ask a ?punk rawker? what they know about the Sex Pistols, and they will probably tell you they were the punks that started it all. Wrong. Ask those kids what the Pistols music even sounds like, or what songs they were most known for, you will probably draw more than a few blank looks. Ask where they were from, or why they started it all they couldn?t tell you. Go ahead, ask them about other bands from that time, like The Jam, or Television, or the Dickies or hell, even the Ramones, and they will probably respond with a blank look. Ask where punk rock came from, they?ll probably tell you San Diego California, back in the 80?s. Wrong Wrong Wrong! Its almost enough to make me want to stop reading my NME?s mags, ditch the skull and crossbones and wear cotton candy pink clothes. Hell, pink is more controversial these days than black. Whatever happened to the days of keeping punk rock elite?
I don?t hate Avril so much as an individual, I won?t listen to her music and I don?t ask her to listen to mine. What really bugs me is the way she?s marketed. Now every girly sue on the block is wearing a tie and falling in love with a sk8ter boi. It wouldn?t bother me so much if her image fit the music, but it doesn?t. It?s confusing the young children, and giving real punk music (and its loyal followers) a bad name. Its getting so I can?t even wear a tie without someone saying "Hey Avril." And that makes me mad. I was wearing ties and rocking out to NOFX long before she came along, but now she?s making me look like a poseur! I guess that?s what most of us really hate about Avril, her being the ultimate poseur, but then making us look like poseurs. When we were keeping it real all along.
And what?s with the bad attitude? Who ever said punks had to be total assholes who swear every 5 seconds and look down on everyone? You can have a take-charge outlook on life without making everyone you meet hate you, you know. Just look at how she treats some interviewers. If I were her, I?d be jumping at the chance for publicity, not rolling my eyes and telling everyone how original and cool I am.
What I think Avril needs is to be taken down a few notches. Shown that although a bad-attitude still sells, being nice and true-to-yourself will sell just as well, if not more. Instead of giving punks, tough girls, and Canadians a bad reputation, couldn?t she try to do some good? Humpf? well, I?ll sit here waiting until next year, when the next trends come in, and Avril moves out and I can go back to being an un-cool punk again, and get beat up for wearing safety pins.
It all started one day while I was on the phone with my (now ex) boyfriend, Matt. We were watching MTV and this girl we'd never heard of came on with a video titled "Complicated". I thought she looked pretty awesome! She dressed like me and loved to sing, as I do. Besides that, skateboarding guys were all over the place (on a side note, I go wild for skater guys, I was like that before Avril came along...my boyfriend was a kickass skateboarder).
Anywoo, Matt thought she looked cool too. I decided to check it out so I bought the CD. Everything she sang about I could relate to. The song "Sk8r Boi", even though spelled oddly, was my favorite. My boyfriend had liked a girl but she didn't like him because he wore baggy pants and her family was really strict. Then him and I met and fell in love. So, naturally, Sk8r Boi makes me think of him. So as time passed, I got my best friend Ashley hooked. Her and I are starting a band called Mental Capacity and we needed ideas to write about. So Ash and I were rocking along to Avril's tunes, and I totally loved her because I knew she'd written her own music. We just loved her music, we didn't try to copy her by wearing ties (I personally think that looks odd). Then it happened. After the Complicated video had debuted, I hadn't heard about her... then she was all over the place, instantly. It was mad. I felt kinda jealous whenever I heard someone singing her songs because I wanted people to know I was her biggest fan (yes that sounds lame). All of a sudden, people were trashin me for wearing baggy pants. I'd always done that! Plus, it was partly my boyfriend's influence on me. He loved my clothing style but others didn't. They'd say I was following Avril, but Ashley would stick up for me. They'd just blow her off. Also, I was told I looked like Avril (Avril with makeup on, lol!)
And as the months went by, people became Avril crazy. I was losing my respect for her as time went on. What got me the maddest was when I read about her interview with "Chet" I believe. She'd totally blown him off! I thought she was a little sweetheart. I thought wrong. Then she started threatening other musicians. I'm a fan of Michelle Branch and when she dissed her, that did it. I lost it for Avril. She has no right to diss other artists! She's the newbie, not them! They've all been working hard to get where they're at and if she doesn't stop, either she'll get her butt kicked or her fans will lose respect for her, like I did.
Then her albums won't sell. Oh, speaking of which, I think she sounds -okay- on her album. She's an okay singer. Then I heard her live at the VMAs and I wanted to cover my ears! UGHHH she sounded AWEFUL.... I swear, why can't people just allow their real voices to be on their CDs? Like with J.Lo. She sounds so pretty on her album, but then live... OMG. STOP. PLEASE. The only three artists I know who don't do that (as far as I know) are Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes and Celine Dion. I could be wrong though. But I'm getting sidetracked.
Also, Avril tells people she won't dress preppy and slutty... yet you turn around and she's wearing a revealing bikini or a midriff-baring shirt! Wtf? And what's with the eye makeup? She's ugly, I'm sorry, without it. But that much makeup makes people wonder "Hmm... does she REALLY care what others think?" ... She's constantly contradicting herself. Like when she claims to play the guitar, yet she doesn't. Oh wait, yeah she does. No, she doesn't. OH YEAH I CAN SKATEBOARD! Oh wait no all I know is an ollie. Pfffft. Make up your darn mind! I know she's knew to the music industry and all, but if you want people to like you - DON'T DISS THEM.
Avril the skater.
In nearly every interview, Avril is always bragging about how she?s a skater, she says her best trick is an Ollie. Anyone who skates or hangs out with/ dates skaters knows an ollie is the first thing you learn. Now in her interview she says that she started skateboarding the summer before eleventh grade. She dropped out when she was sixteen, she?s seventeen now, so she?s been skateboarding about a year or so. Now some people learn faster than others, but only being able to do an ollie after a year is sad, really sad. Most people learn an ollie in about one to three months.
As soon as you hear the words ?skater girl? you think of Avril. Why? Because she made skateboarding popular. ::cough cough:: that really offends me and my friends. We are girl skaters and have been skateboarding way before Avril?s music ever hit the airwaves. Now all a sudden, were Avril-clones, that really pisses me off. Whenever we walk by the preps they all start singing ?sk8er boi? I think Avril shouldn?t have dropped out of high school, usually they teach you how to spell those words your senior year.
it's not very much a question of image coz technically image may be what we think of ourselves, of who we are (like ego). and it doesn't matter to me much that she keeps calling herself punk or skater girl or something, when others think of punk or skater girl differently, coz it's just the way things go, you have your opinion, and others have theirs.
but the thing that turns me off about avril is her manners and her upbringing. that she doesn't give importance to the people around her, doesn't respect others. i read the interview with chet and it saddens me to see that the model of youth (you may argue but it's true, coz of all the media hype) is a very rude and insensitive person (insensitive meaning doesn't think of others, only thinks of oneself). it's ok to skate and be punky as hell all day everyday and convince everybody that it's not image and that it's just the truth if you don't go about hurting other people's feelings. i believe, and every one of you will agree that being punk is not equivalent to being rude.
i don't hate avril, i just don't like her manners. if she's building up her image by cussing and being rude, one day, nobody's gonna like her, even her friends. coz nobody like a bad-mouthed person for a friend. and that day, she'll be the loneliest person on earth. then maybe, just maybe, she'll learn her lesson well.
Hi,
I just thought I'd write in and voice my own opinion
on Avril. I live in the UK, and Avril's starting to
make it big here. I didn't know much about her, but I
got her album as I liked her song 'Complicated'.
However, as I listened to her album, I thought, "hmmm,
she seems a bit rude, and contradictory, and a teensy
bit up her own arse." But then I thought, hey, maybe
I'm just envious of her success, she's gorgeous, has a
good voice and plays the guitar. Besides, all the
critics are raving.
I first want to make something crystal clear. I am
not a Sk8er/Punk/Rock chick/Goth/Grunger. Nor am I a
"Preppy" (we do not have this word in England...but
I'm guessing it means someone who's into Britney and
stuff?) I am...I don't know myself! My music taste
ranges from dance/trance/rock/hip-hop/pop/jazz and I
mainly dress in "business" clothes (all shirts, blacks
and pin stripes...bear in mind I'm only 15, but no, I
haven't got a problem!)
So me disliking Avril has nothing to do with whether
she's a real punk or not. I dislike her because she's,
plain and simple, a hypocrite (and from what I've
read, rude). She's doing what everyone else is
doing...trying to fit into a group. I almost choked
when I read she claimed she was, "an original" and
"anything but ordinary". I'm not sure about the USA or
Canada, but being a Sk8er or Grunger in the UK is
practically the norm nowadays. And anyway, if she
really was an "original" she wouldn't of said the word
"Sk8er", because, and I'm almost certain of
it...Sk8ers already existed before her!
And her dissing Britney, let me state right now that
I have far more respect for Britney than Avril, mainly
because Britney is manufactured AND SHE DOESN'T DENY
IT. I have nothing against manufactured music
anyway. It is extremely narrow-minded to say all
manufactured music is shit...if it sounds good, what
does it matter who it's by? Isn't that the whole point
of music, the actual SOUND of it. This just goes to
show how concerned society today is with image,
whether it be the image of a pop tart or a cool band
who sings it "real".
Anyway, back to the point of my letter. Avril
Lavigne. The, very obviously, immature teenager who
has not grown up and experienced life at all. Not
saying I have (what can I talk about? I'm only 15, I
don't know jack!) But I don't go around claiming I am
so much more "real" then everyone else. And her
lyrics...even if she did write them herself, they're
not very impressive. Anyone can complain...it's easy!
(She could've at least used a thesaurus for some
better words...her language is very basic. Sorry, just
had to add that)
There are so many kids I know in London who wear
"bling bling", tight clothes and listen to rap to
prove that they're in a certain group. And there are
other kids I also know who wear baggy trousers,
constantly diss "corporate shit" music and think they
can play the guitar. Avril, obviously, belongs in the
latter. Therefore, she is no different to all these
kids. Therefore, she IS NOT ORIGINAL. The equation is
pretty simple.
Saying all this though, I listen to Avril's music
for...uh, the music. The tunes are quite good
(although they do become a bit repetitive after a
while). The lyrics, I try very hard to ignore. I think
Avril misunderstands something; it takes more than
just teen angst lyrics to make a good song...you need
to come up with a different melody after 3 songs or
so.
If Avril wants to go and wear a top showing her
cleavage or mid-riff, whatever, I respect her for
doing what she wants to do.But to deny it??? That is
lower than low, even lower than looking overly
suggestive. Everyone should be what they are, or what
they feel most comfortable being. There are some
people in life who will never be themselves, they will
always follow the crowd. But they know it, they admit
it, and they accept it. It's better than pretending,
and then lying about it, saying they're NOT copying
anyone. Yes, Avril, YOU!
I just visited your anti avril lavigne site and just thought i'd throw my two cents into the equation. I live in Australia and Avril just sorta started up here, but is making it big. Now when i first saw her film clip for Complicated i thought to myself "cool, finnaly someone real in the music industry" and boy was i wrong. The more i began to find out about Avril the less i began to like her. I believe everybodies entitled to their own opinion and all but the way she slags off alot of really talented musicians like Michelle Branch. She is also just well alomst justifying the opinions of some of the older egeneration towards the youth of today. Where i'm from the teenagers get blamed for alot of things and they just seem to write us all off without so much as a backward glance. Sure we do the spot of vandalisim here and there but not every teenager is like that. Avril is just convincing them even more that if we were given half the chance we'd still be rude, up ourself little brats and quite frankly i'm sick of it. And nowdays i can't wear half the stuff i'd like to without being called an "avril wannabe" AS IF. In reality i doubt anyody would like to be like that spoilt, rude, self centered little poser. She seems so pissed with everybody "copying her" when the realisation is she copied other people. Well thats my opinion anywayz and as i said earlier everybodies entitled to their own one. Well thankz for letting me vent that.
Without a doubt the most egomaniacal, self-righteous and critical little
girl in POP music. I hate the fact that everywhere I go, I see people who,
two years ago, used to criticize me and even threaten me for the way I
dress, and now they just steal the same fashions. Why is it that, if MTV
decides to make someone or something the next big thing, then the public
must adopt it or be ridiculed. I'm sorry if I have a mind of my own and I
have taste and realize that punk was so much more than picking up a guitar,
giving people the finger and dressing "alternatively". It is a f'ing way
of life, and it is not one that Avril and her little army of poser punks
follow.
And it's not even like one can respect her for her musicianship. She isn't
one. Playing three cords on a guitar does not make you a guitar player. It
just makes you look like a hack. And she actually has vocal assistance.
That's just f'ing pathetic. And learn to CO-write a decent song. Talking
about breakfast cereals and singing cheesy love songs is not
thought-provoking. I am surprised that her fans haven't all gone comatose
after listening to that album.
She is the last thing the world needed. We have had more than enough
manufactured pop acts in the last five years. Haven't we been tortured
enough. And on a personal note, she's a bit of racist, and that just sickens
me. If Shakira doesn't deserve a record deal for not speaking english, then
she doesn't deserve one because of her lack of talent. She is polluting our
minds and discouraging originality. She needs to die in the face thrice.
(don't ask)
Kiss My Ass

Hey, avril haterz around tha world... just thought i'd send this, cuz i REALLY hate avril.... first off... i'll start with her songs, the first time i heard complicated, i liked it. it was the videoclip mostly... figuring she woz a skater, with attitude, but no... looking into it, she wasn't. she claims in many interviews that she "sucks" at skating... and can only ollie. fine. dis urself, we dun care... but ur band? frum wat i see, and read, they dont suk, so she cant say they do. which brings me to another point... her band. apparantly (found thru thorough research) she has one. i have asked many fans of her if they knew she had a band, and they'd be like, "what??... band... then y doesn't she mention them at all??" yes... thats just it... they're in her videoclips, to make her look better. its not like their a hired band, used to create music to go with her voice(like pink and eminem), its her friends... how can u get famous and not mention them? she should have thought up a band name, then ppl might realise, but instead she takes the glory, and publicises herself as just avril. not mentioning the band leads ppl to believe that she playz tha guitar, like she tries to do... but alas, she doesn't even do that. anyone can sing, if its thru a studio... it shows talent if you play an instrument. OMG!!!!!!! when she playz live... *shudders* awful... just awful... just how enhanced is her voice on the cd?
her dissin those otha artists, (there are too many to mention) is plain disgusting. i could understand displaying your dispise towards britney and her sluttish look, but not obsessing about it, and dissing her music(which i personally dont like, but hey...) michelle branch has talent, unlike avril... and her attitude towards christina aguilera? "... i thought that hoe died!" well, to begin with, her newly aquired image is just that, new... she wasn't a little hoe in her beginning songs, so obviously thinking she died... b4 that image... was another of her many lies.
wow... if i ever had to do an opinionative piece for english, i have my topic...
avril is so.... contraversial... i dont get it... wouldn't you realise that ur doing that?? if u wanna lie... do it right! "..im not pop, im punk rock... ppl need to realise that.." and then "... i never said i was punk, so whats ur problem?..." hmmm.... is she, or is she not a punk? (well... to me she aint) she seems to think she is. Her vision of creating more of her(well... not really her...)music, is scary... thats one word...
she has destroyed the looks she stole... for instance the tie thing?? i saw ppl wearing those b4 she was heard of, and now they are just posers to the ppl who see avril. the tie thing being an "original idea" for avril.... sorry, wrong again. there is a No Doubt film clip where she wears a tie, which was released ages ago. what i do hate is all the posers who actually are copying avril... then claiming to be original because they do so... duh... original?? like.. hmm.... hey, that looks cool, i'll copy it and be original... in an interview she stated that she blew off a couple preppyz who wanted her autograph, telling them that her music was not for them(what a cruel li'l cow!).... thatz just a price to pay for the fame avril... get used to it!
ewwwwwwwww... just a last thought.... the buttcrack thing... in an interview she claims it to be "her thing" i dun get how pink copied it... 2 years b4 avril's stardom... queer... newayz... that waz my rant... i shall go spread the hatred for avril elsewhere...
frum Natasha
anything but punk thats putting in mildly when describing new brainwasher of 2003 avril lavigne(vaginal cream)she is the epitamy of all things not punk.punk isnt going to hot topic and buying everything in stock. Punk isn't selling yourself to every teen magazine in the free world.punk most certainly is not having millions of peppy fanclubs around the world.i will always tell people:do not call someone a poseur unless you know them: no i do not know avril but i know enough about her to know she is 100% pure candian poseur. Some people may call me a poseur because suddenly the fact that i wear ties spikey belts and other "avril related" items im suddenly the one following, when in reality avril is following all young punks. How do i know avril isnt punk theres many reasons,
So instance if you listen to her music it is pop 100% and her yoddeling like a dying animal of some sort. shes a constant liar one interview she says "i skateboard" the next she says"they wanted me to skateboard but i was all i suck man" Oh yeah...im about to gag on her "hardcoresness". She says"im just a skater punk" Yeah f*ck that, she isnt punk and she is finally evoking her"hardcore lyk totally punkyness"because people were mobbing her on the streets(oi to those people!)as for avrils spelling,it is apparent she did drop out of highschool even benji from gc says after veiwing avrils video "thats skater with an 8 and boy with an i,boys and girls, its like so punky!" avril is not only hated by true punk fans around the world but true punk musicians through-out the world,so you ask why rant on and on about my fiery hate and passion to throw up whenever hering or seeing the sadly enough fast rising star vaginal cream?Because this is someone that is so irritatuing to me and other punks alike that we feel the need to spread the true avril image through-out whatever part of the world we can.
i remember only a while ago me and my friend hannah went to vegas sporting our ties spikes and what not. and we had countless people come up to us and say"its that like a little trend where you live" after avril came out we went back to vegas dressing the way we always do and were bombarded by avril fans saying"why do you have to rip off her ideas!"im sick of being labeled as the poseur when in reality the poseur are the people who just started the "punkness" after avril came out and think avril is all definations of the word punk. those are the true poseurs with avril being the leader of them all.
So now i carry around two pictures of me on hannah january,27th,2002 and april 27th 02 so people can see, that long beofre avril was around we were there.with our ties. avril is poseur in all forms of the world, and anything but orginal is putting it for to lightly
Okay, First of all let me tell you that your website is really awesome, and the alternative song lyrics are hilarious. and i would like to apologize, in advance for some not too well thought out things that i might say, this email would be worded better if i hadnt just read the interview with chet and gotten pissed off
First of all! I do believe that there is a special place in hell for little teeny-bopper bitches like ms.lavigne..and i cant stand how she always contradicts herself, i even HAVE the magazines where she says that shes a punk, and then says that she never called herself a punk, that little bitch contradicts herself so many times i dont even think she remembers what she says in half of her interviews, she's obviously too busy thinking of new and "original" ways to make everyone believe that she is "punk" to pay attention to the nonsense that is coming out of her mouth.
Second of all, you dont have to start every sentence with "fucK" or "ass" or "shit" or whatever to be cool, or punk, she acts like she's from that cartoon..southpark?..but, sadly enough, even little eric cartman is more "punk" than that child is.
AND lastly, she talks way too much junk about other artists, who are WAYY more talented than she is, she said that michelle branch had better "watch her back" what the hell is avril gonna do? she needs to have some respect for other musical artists, especially if they have more talent than her, she cant just show up on mtv one day and then start talking shit about everyone the next she called pink a "poseur" as well..hah i just thought that was hilarious...thanks for letting me vent all my opinions about avril..even though nothing i say can stop former preppies from buying converses and 300$ t-shirts from hot topic, the trends will pass and everything will be good again....
Avril Lavignes recent stardom has proved one thing to me though, There is no JEsus!!!!!
Thanks to everyone who sends in their testomonies!!
