Edwin and J. Englishman-April 6, 2000 @ the Guvernment

Doors opened at 8pm, and we got in shortly after that. I managed to snag a spot right up front, towards the right hand side. (if you know how the guvernment is set up, then it's the side where the "backstage" area is--the backstage area is a black curtain that separates the actual concert area from the backstage area--so we could clearly see backstage from where we were)

J. Englishman came on at about 8:45-8:50, or something like that. Their set was really good, and considering that i hadn't heard very much of their stuff, I was totally won over. I really enjoyed their portion of the show. The drummer was funny. He made the FUNNIEST faces while he was drumming. I managed to sneak my camera in, but i had a security guard in front of me the whole time, so I took one good picture while he was turned around. I got another picture too, but after that, he noticed i had a camera, and he told me i couldn't take pictures, so i decided not to risk it, even though i would definetly be taking a few of edwin (i already have a lot of edwin pictures, but these ones would've been so good, cause I was really close to the stage)

Then, we were up for a long wait before edwin came on. It wasn't too bad though, cause they started playing some Verve songs (they were playing country before...) I asked the security guard if he could grab me a set list after the show, and he said probably not cause they were taped down. :/

Then, I saw the band off to the side of the stage, and I knew it was time for them to come on. I was SO pumped! I couldn't wait! All of a sudden, the sound of Theories comes over the speakers, and the band walks out on stage! It was AWESOME!! I was right in front of Ruben, and he was staring at me throughout the whole concert. I was the only person in my section who knew all the words to all the songs (except for "give it" -- i don't know the words to that). The rest of the girls there were basically teenyboppers, and I heard them yell "EDWIN TAKE IT OFF!" about 50 times. I was ready to turn around and punch them!

I couldn't believe it when they played Better Than This. That is one of my favourite songs on the album, and i thought it was AMAZING the way they played it that night. I was screaming all the songs at the top of my lungs! Every once in a while, Ruben would glance at me, and would smile, cause he knew that I was totally into the show, and i was there for the music, not just to see edwin "take it off"

during Hang Ten, right at the beginning, Edwin was playing on the bongos, and Ruben was just standing off to the side. We were staring at each other for at least 30 seconds. Then I started laughing/smiling, and Ruben was laughing at/with me! It was just so hilarious (i guess you had to be there) Then, my sister nudges me and says "are you laughing at ruben?!" and i'm like "uhh...yeah!" and we laughed some more.

Then, my sister noticed that J. Englishman was standing right beside the stage, watching Edwin's set. So, I turned around, and the lights got a little brighter at that point, so I saw that J. and I were looking at each other, so i smiled and waved at him, and he did the same. :)

The last song they played before the encore was Levitate. That is one of my FAVOURITE I Mother Earth songs!! I freaked out when I heard it!! I was jumping around and screaming at the top of my lungs! it was AWESOME!

Then they left, and the crowd cheered for them to come back. They came back and played Another Drink (eek!!) i thought i would never hear them play that again! it was AWESOME! and then they played One More Astronaut. I think, at that point, they left again, and came back, and then played Magic Carpet Ride, and then they left for good.

After that, the lights came on, and the background music was up, so we knew that it was over. I asked the security guard again if i could have the set list (cause the other security guard was getting another set list for someone else) and he told me that he couldn't get it. then two guys standing next to me asked him for the set list, and he went up and got it for them! i was SO pissed off at that guy! he is the worst security guard in the world! (i know who you are, buddy! you better hope that you're not in front of me at another concert!!) So, i figured there was no point in arguing with him, so I left. Then, we were near the sound area, and i asked one of the security guards there if i could have the set list that they had taped up, and he said "well, it's not really my place to say, you'd have to ask one of the sound guys" So, i found a sound guy and i asked him for the set list, and he asked one of his buddies, and they both decided to give me the set list! woo hoo! those guys ROCK!

so then, as we were leaving, i decided to buy an edwin shirt (the one i have is an extra large, and i can't wear it cause it looks like a dress on me!) As I was standing around (talking to some friends that i saw) deciding which shirt to buy, Chowder (ex-glueleg, now in J. Englishman's band) walked by, and I didn't even notice him! (but my sister did...ahh well!) so, i bought a black long sleaved edwin shirt, and a sticker, and then we decided to go outside and see if we could meet anyone.

it didn't take me long to find someone. as soon as we were out in the parking lot area, we saw the drummer from J's band (i think his name was Jr.) so i went over and talked to him for a bit, and he signed my autograph book. Then, J. was standing beside me, so i turned around, and waited my turn. Then he said "hi! what's your name?" and i said "katie" and he started to sign my book, and said "is it katie with two t's?" i'm like "umm...no, the regular spelling...one t" so then he's like "oh, ok!" and i said to him "you guys played a great set!" and he said "thank you!!" and then i asked him if i could get a picture with him, and he said of course, and he put both his arms around me! it was so cool :)

then we walked over to the guitarist. he is such a cutie! i said hi to him, and i handed him my book, and he was surprised and said "ooh! do i get to sign this?!" and i said "yeah! of course you do!" so he signed, then he handed it back to me and told me that he wrote "big hugs!" then we were saying that hugs were good, and he looked at me and goes "do you want a hug?!" and i said "sure!" so he gave me a big hug, and we were laughing, and we talked some more about hugs, so i turned to my sister and said "do you want a hug!?" and i hugged her, and he goes "awww!" and then he hugged the other guy who was standing next to him (i'm assuming that he was the road manager) and then we yelled out "group hug!" so we all (except for my sister, who thought it was silly) hugged each other and were laughing. then the road manager guy had a cigarrette in his hand, and he looked at me and goes "AAH! you're burning!" and they were all frantic, trying to get the ashes off me (i really was in no danger!) and we were laughing and i go "hmm...burning myself probably wouldn't be the best way to end an evening!" and they're like "no, definetly not!!" then we were talking about how there were 7 guys crammed in their van, and they would do anything to NOT have to go back in there, so we talked a little more.

then, we went over to edwin's bus, hoping that he would come out. I saw Kenny, and i asked him to sign my set list (i already have my cd's, pictures, scrapbook, autograph book and everything else signed by them!) So Kenny goes "ooh! set list!" and he signed it, and then left. We waited around for a bit, with some other friends that i found, and we stayed until about 12:30, or so, but then i couldn't wait any longer, cause i had to wake up early the next morning, so i didn't meet anyone else, but that was alright cause it was a great evening! :)

this is me and j. englishman, after the show:
