The White Ribbon Benefit Concert

Featuring: j. englishman, Jeff Martin (and the Tea Party), David Usher, Gordie Johnson, Danny Greaves, and Haydain Neale.
Tuesday June 6, 2000 - The Phoenix Concert Theatre

I attended this concert with my friend Amber, and some CC friends that were visiting from Edmonton, Erika, Robyn, and their friend Irena. So, we got down there at around 7-7:30ish, and we were waiting in line. then, all of a sudden, after we had been waiting there about 15 minutes, we look up, and we see this bright red head coming towards us *L* it was j. englishman!. he just walked right by us, and we smiled and said "hey j!" and he smiled and waved back, and walked away. i don't know why none of us decided to go talk to him...but we didn't...cause we're morons *L* ahh well. so anyways, then we're standing in line some more, and i end up meeting a whole bunch of my other friends from the 'net. Then i notice someone who looks like Lana, but no one will go over and ask her, so we finally convince Irena to go over and ask her, and it turns out that it was her. so we chatted for a bit...then we realized that all of us had camera's but they weren't allowed, so we got Lana to put my camera in her bag (she has a photo pass) so (eventually, when we got in there) i would get to take pictures!

so anyways, we ended up getting in there about a half hour after doors were supposed to open, and we ended up snagging ourselves a spot right up front. then Dinusha told her that she would be leaving at about 11:00, so we could have her spot after she left. (she was in front of us).

so then, the first band called Rocket Science comes out. They were really good, even though i had never heard of them before. check out www.rocketscienceonline.com for more on them.

next, bill welychka from much music came on stage to do a little introduction, and j. englishman was up first! (yay!) he started with a REALLY amazing version of Where The Streets Have No Name, then he spoke a little bit about the cause, and then he played Little Red Corvette! he sounded really awesome, even though he was supposedly fighting a cold...right when he started, i saw Lana, and i got my camera back, so from this point on, i got to take pictures (without the flash, of course)

next, Danny Greaves, from the Watchmen came out, and he played two songs, the first one i didn't know, and the second one i vaguely knew. but he sounded really good too!

after Danny was Haydain Neale. now, haydain was probably the only one out of all the performers that i really didn't want to see, but he turned out to be REALLY good. i was impressed by this guy...and i don't say that too often! he played two soul-type songs... Mrs. Jones, and another...he was very good.

next up was David Usher (and his tiny pants) *L* he only did one song...One Of Us. that used to be one of my favourite songs when i was a kid. i LOVED that song :) he came out with his lyric sheet, and even though he screwed up on a few of the words, he sounded really good too. Jeff Martin also came out and played guitar with him. after this, dinusha left, so i got a spot right up against the stage :)

next up was Jeff Martin. He also brought the members of the Tea Party out with him, half way through :) They played a few songs, including Jeff Buckley, Love Will Tear Us Apart Again, Release, and a few others. it was AMAZING. then a little later, jeff played acoustic, with another guy who played african hand drums...it was awesome. then, after that, Gordie Johnson came out and played guitar and sang with Jeff.

while Gordie was playing with Jeff, i noticed j. englishman sitting off in the corner, behind the curtains, so i was staring at him, then i caught his eye, and he smiled/laughed, and waved at me (and amber, who was behind/beside me) it was cute :) but for like, the rest of the performance, i couldn't pay attention, cause i kept looking over at j.! :)

so anyways, then it was almost over, so they were supposed to all come out and play together for the encore, but it ended up being just jeff/the tea party, gordie johnson, and j. (who was singing with the back up singers) they played No Woman, No Cry, and it was awesome! j. was doing the back up vocals, but he was also *trying* to sing along...he TOTALLY didn't know the words though! *L* it was funny. then they left.

10 minutes later, they came back, and they played another song, but i can't remember what it is right now...but i remember that it was really good :)

so after that, we walked out, and we decided to get a hotdog, and wait for some of the bands to come out, and hopefully, meet j. (amber has never met him, and she really wanted to). so, we're sitting there with our hotdogs, on the curb, and suddenly david usher walks by us! we look up, i said "hi david!" he said "hey!" smiled, and waved, and just walked down the rest of the entrance way, straight into a cab. it was really hilarious, cause none of us felt like getting up, cause we were eating (we hadn't eaten anything since lunch, at that point, and we were starving) i had already met david before though, so it didn't bother me too much.

then we decided to wait a little longer, and we talked to Lana, and some others. then these guys come out, wheeling one of those boxes with instruments, and Robyn hears them say something, and she was led to believe that j. englishman (who we heard was a little, umm..."tipsy") was in the box. so we walked over to the truck that they loaded the box into, just incase he was actually in there, *L* but then it drove away. (we later learned that j. in fact, was not in a box, and he left the club through the front doors a little later) so then we decided it was beyond time to go home, and we were all dead tired :)

a webcast of the show is available right now here but i don't know how long it will be up there for.

pictures soon!
