Predator Calling

                                    How can I call a coyote ?

There`s no easy answer to that question.
Every location and every hunt seems to be somewhat different when attempting to call these animals to the gun.
The eastern coyote in this area is a very wary animal that will not readily come to the call and hunters will usually attempt many stands before even getting a glimpse at one.
The best success I have had has been well into winter and well after January.
I wake up early, sometimes at four in the morning and drive to a pre selected area that I know coyotes frequent.
I try not to over call any one area.
Upon reaching the location I`ll exit the truck quietly and check the wind.
With about a half hour to spare before daylight, I`ll walk into the stand or area where I`ll call from a location beside an obsticle such as a log , tree or shrub.
At this time the gun is already loaded and I`ll wait a few minutes before I start calling.
It`s best to call cross wind when possible, a coyote will almost always get down wind of your location as it approaches the sound.
It`s absolutely paramount to be as motionless as possible.
Start calling with short frantic bursts for fifteen to twenty seconds and watch for any movement then repeat the process waiting a minute or more between calling.
Sometimes I`ll use a howler in conjunction with a distress call, the coyotes will sometimes respond with a howl and sometimes they`ll just walk or run into my location.
New coyote hunters should be very patient and not become discouraged if they aren`t successful the first few times out.
These animals are not easy to call for two reasons, one is they are very well fed and the other reason is they are very wary but if you stay with it you`ll experience the thrill of calling one in.
Practice your calling at home , be quiet , be still, and be patient when in the field, sooner or later it will all come together for you.

Mouth Calls ...

Dr. Ed Sceery

This is the AP-7 Open Reed predator call that will produce a wide range of sounds generally used by the more experienced caller but it only takes a little practice to reproduce very natural  sounds that will bring any predator to the caller.
You simply blow into the call and lightly bite down on the reed.

This is a Closed Reed predator call which is the best choice for the novice caller.
This particular mouth call is the AP-5 Snowshoe Hare distress call.
I have had excellent results with this call in northern Ontario and recommend it to anyone starting out in the northern regions where the natural prey species is the snowshoe hare.
