CANCEL BOWL 6: Hair of the Leprechaun
Nine teams gathered at BU on
March 18, 2006 to compete for the right to be called the trashiest team in the
617 area code. In the end, though, it was a team from New York that took the title
(why does that sound familiar?), as the NYU Rhythm Syndicate took top honors.
Standings after the prelims were
as follows:
NYU Rhythm Syndicate |
46 points |
Brandeis |
44.5 |
If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It |
41.5 |
BU This, That, and Scatman
Crothers |
28.5 |
Columbia Juan Valdez's Reasons
Why Not |
27 |
BU Omega |
26.5 |
Boston College |
23.5 |
V For Gerbil |
17.5 |
Purple Cobras |
6.5 |
Prelim standings were kept using the
modified NASL format, where teams earned 3 points per win and a half point for
every 50 points they scored in the game. More traditional team stats are
available via the links below.
A one-round playoff was held due
to time constraints from another engagement (which was announced well in
advance and not objected to until it was useful to score cheap points on the
Yahoo quizbowl group). As the 9th
place team, the Purple Cobras did not participate. Results:
7th Place: V For Gerbil 235,
Boston College 186
5th Place: Columbia Juan Valdez's
Reasons Why Not 320, BU Omega 55
3rd Place: If It Ain't Broke,
Don't Fix It 290, BU This That and Scatman Crothers 125
1st Place: NYU Rhythm Syndicate
445, Brandeis 165
For their win, NYU took home a
set of playing cards and poker chips, which might now ensure that every college
student in America has a poker set-up.
The second and third place teams took home a set of books each, one
entitled Totally Taylor, about Taylor Hanson, the other Is Your Crush
Crushing On You?, which appeared to be aimed at third graders.
On the individual side, Jack
Brounstein of BU Omega took top honors.
I forget what he wound up with, but there was a cornucopia of crap he
could have chosen from. I'll spare you the details.
As always, some thanks:
First, to the teams for their
help in staffing. Without it, this
tournament would literally not run. Added thanks to the Purple Cobras for
staffing the playoff round, which they probably would have rather played. Give
yourselves a round of applause.
Second, to the folks at UTC and
Georgia for lending packs from ACF Detox and Tournament By the Sea III. We actually wound up using fewer of
these than expected, so some folks stayed afterwards and played on the
extras. Either way, the questions
were much appreciated.
Finally, thanks to the BU folks
for hosting, providing snacks, and to Pat for volunteering to be the other
dedicated staffer.
I should also thank the folks
behind SQBS, without whom these stats would be much less complete. I will provide links here for the overall standings
and individual
scoring. The pages are linked
so you can then easily move to team detail, round by round, etc.
