Abbot, Anderson R.; 7th USCT ?, from Canada. I am fairly certain that he was born in Canada, and he was educated in Toronto. In 1861 he attained his license to practice medicine in Canada. During the Civil War he earned the rank of Captain and served with two other African-Canadian doctors, Alexander T. Augusta and Jerome Riley. In the future, I will most likely compile a longer biography; for now, anyone interested in learning more should refer to "Look to the North Star" [see bottom]

He was also associated with Frederick Douglass's North Star and was a friend of John Brown. Sometime in the mid 1850s, Delany left the United States and settled in Chatham, Canada West, which is near Buxton, and established a medical practice there. During the Civil War, he became commander of the 104th USCT, being the first African-American to become a Major in the U. S. Army. More on his life can be found in "Look to the North Star" p. 243 ff.

This is a very interesting and readable source on the Buxton Settlement established near Chatham, Ontario. On page 273 the author claims that shortly after it was learned that the First Michigan Colored Infantry was being recruited in Detroit, approximately 70 men from the settlement, many of them members of the 24th Kent Militia, marched off to enlist. This was in mid-August.
