The purpose of this page is to help you untangle the welter of medication brands, names and ingredients, both inside and outside the US. In addition to basic information about the many meds we use, we've provided links to the web sites of major medications.

While we cannot cover every drug that any one of us may take, we've tried to provide information about the medications (mast cell stabilizers, antihistamines, leukotriene blockers, etc.) that tend to be taken or prescribed for mast cell-related disorders.

Adrenalin: Brand name for epinephrine inhaler, available OTC in the US.
Adrenalin Chloride: Brand name for epinephrine injection, available in the US.
Aerius®: Brand name for desloratadine, available by prescription in Canada only.
Alavert™: Brand name for loratadine, manufactured in the US by Wyeth. This OTC tablet is made to "melt in mouth" rather than being swallowed with water.
Aldecin Inhaler: Brand name for beclomethasone dipropionate. Available in Australia only.
Aleve: Brand name for naproxen sodium, available OTC in the US.
Allegra®: Brand name for fexofenadine HCl, available by prescription and manufactured in the US by Aventis Pharmaceuticals Inc. Also available in Canada.
Allegra-D®: Brand name for extended-release tablets that contain 60 mg of fexofenadine HCL (an H1-blocking antihistamine) for immediate-release and 120 mg of pseudoephedrine HCl for extended-release. See Allegra®.

Astemizole: H1-blocking non-sedating antihistamine, no longer available in the US. Formerly manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutica. Used to treat symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria and seasonal allergies. Brand Name: Hismanal. For information about the FDA's decision to withdraw astemizole from sale for safety reasons.
AsthmaHaler: Brand name for epinephrine bitartrate nebulizer inhaler, available OTC in the US.
Atarax: Brand name for hydroxyzine HCl, available by prescription in US. Also available in Canada.
Atozine: Brand name for hydroxyzine HCl, available by prescription in the US.
Avomine: Brand name for promethazine HCl, available by prescription in Australia only.
Azatadine maleate: H1-blocking antihistamine, related to cyproheptadine, with anti-serotonin, anticholinergic (drying), and sedative effects. Available by prescription in the US and manufactured by Schering-Plough. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses. Originally approved by the FDA in 1977. Used to treat rhinitis, allergic symptoms, and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Brand Names: Optimine, Trinalin, Zadine.

Banophen: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available OTC in the US. Also available as Banophen Caplets.
Beclodisk: Brand name for beclomethasone dipropionate. Available in Canada only.
Becloforte Inhaler: Brand name for beclomethasone dipropionate. Available in Australia only.
Beclomethasone dipropionate: An anti-inflammatory steroid that decreases inflammation, probably by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes. Used as an inhalation to treat steroid-dependent asthma and as a nasal spray to treat allergies. Brand names: Aldecin Inhaler, Beclodisk, Becloforte Inhaler, Beclovent, Beconase AQ Nasal Spray, Vancenase AQ Nasal Spray, and Vanceril.
Beclovent: Brand name for beclomethasone dipropionate. Also available in Canada only as Beclovent Rotacaps.
Beconase AQ Nasal Spray: Brand name for beclomethasone dipropionate used as a nasal spray that is anti-inflammatory and vasoconstricting. Also available as Beconase Nasal Inhaler. Available by prescription and manufactured in the US by GlaxoSmithKline. Available in the United Kingdom from GlaxoWellcome.
Beldin: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available OTC in the US.
Belix: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available OTC in the US.
Bena-D: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available in the US.
Benadryl®: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, manufactured in the US by Pfizer. Also available in Canada. Also available as Benadryl Allergy, Benadryl 25, and Benadryl Kapseals.
Benahist: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available in the US.
Ben-Allergin: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available in the US.

Bromphen: Brand name for brompheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US. Liquid form contains alcohol.
Brompheniramine maleate: H1-blocking antihistamine. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses. Used to treat rhinitis and allergic symptoms. Brand Names: Bromphen, Chlorphed, Conjec-B, Cophene-B, Dehist, Diamine T.D., Dimetane Extendtabs, Histaject Modified, Nasahist B, ND-Stat Revised B, Oraminic II, and Veltane.
Broniten Mist: Brand name for epinephrine inhaler and epinephrine bitartrate nebulizer inhaler, available OTC in the US.
Bronkaid Mist Suspension: Brand name for epinephrine bitartrate nebulizer inhaler, available OTC in the US.
Bronkaid Mistometer: Brand name for epinephrine inhaler, available OTC in Canada only.
Brufen: Brand name for ibuprofen. Available in Australia only.
Budesonide: An anti-inflammatory steroid that decreases inflammation. Used as a nasal spray to treat allergies. Brand name: Rhinocort® Aqua.
Bydramine cough syrup: Brand of diphenhydramine HCl, available OTC as an oral syrup and manufactured in the US by Major Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Calm X: Brand name for dimenhydrinate, available OTC in the US.
Celebrex: Brand name for celecoxib, available by prescription and manufactured in the US by Pfizer. Available in capsules.
Celecoxib: NSAID that selectively inhibits COX-2, thus producing fewer negative effects than do traditional NSAIDs. Brand name: Celebrex.
Cetirizine hydrochloride: Non-sedating H1-blocking antihistamine. Brand name: Reactine and Zyrtec.
Children's Dimetapp® ND Non-Drowsy Allergy: Brand name for loratadine (10 mg), manufactured in the US by Wyeth.
Chlo-Amine: Brand name for chlorpheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US.
Chlor-100: Brand name for chlorpheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US.
Chlorate: Brand name for chlorpheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US.
Chlor-Niramine: Brand name for chlorpheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US.
Chlorphed: Brand name for brompheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US.
Chlorpheniramine maleate: Older sedating H1-blocking antihistamine that can be administered orally or by subcutaneous injection. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses. Used to treat rhinitis and allergic symptoms. Tablets available OTC. Also called chlorprophenpyridamine maleate. Chlor-Trimeton®: Brand name for chlorpheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US. Also available as Chlor-Trimeton Allergy, Chlor-Trimeton Allergy 12 Hour, and Chlor-Trimeton Repetabs. Liquid form contains alcohol.
Chlor-Tripolon: Brand name for chlorpheniramine maleate, available only in Canada.
Cimetidine: H2-blocking antihistamine that prevents the release of acid into the stomach. Used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Cimetidine is available as a prescription drug and OTC for the relief of heartburn. Brand name: Tagamet®.
Clarinase: Brand name for loratadine combined with pseudoephedrine sulphate, available in the United Kingdom. Also available in double-strength tablets as Clarinase 24-hour Relief.
Clarinex®: Brand name for desloratadine, available by prescription and manufactured in the US by Schering Corp..
Claritin®: Brand name for loratadine, available OTC and manufactured in the US by Schering-Plough. Also available in Canada. Also available as Claritin Reditabs.
Clemastine fumarate: H1-blocking antihistamine. Used to treat rhinitis and allergic symptoms. Brand names: Allerhist-1, Contac 12 Hour Allergy, Tavist.
Clorfed: Brand name for extended-release chlorpheniramine maleate and pseudoephedrine HCl tablets, available by prescription in the US. (This is a new brand, introduced in April, 2004.)
Codimal-A: Brand name for brompheniramine maleate, available in the US.
Compazine®: Brand name for prochlorperazine maleate, manufactured in the US by GlaxoSmithKline.
Compoz® Nighttime Sleep Aid: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available OTC in the US. Also available as Compoz® Gel Caps.
Comtrex Maximum Strength Caplets: Brand name for tablets containing acetaminophen 500mg (pain reliever/fever reducer), chlorpheniramine maleate, and pseudoephedrine HCl, available OTC in the US.
Conjec-B: Brand name for brompheniramine maleate, available OTC in the US.
Contac 12 Hour Allergy: Brand name for clemastine fumarate, available OTC in the US.
Cophene-B: Brand name for brompheniramine maleate, available in the US.
Corticosteroids: See corticosteroids.
Cromolyn sodium: Mast cell stabilizer. Cromolyn sodium inhibits the release of mediators from sensitized mast cell. It acts by inhibiting the release of histamine and leukotrienes from the mast cell. It does not have intrinsic vasoconstrictor, antihistamine, or glucocorticoid activity. Brand names: Gastrocrom, Intal, Nalcrom, and Opticrom.
Cyproheptadine hydrochloride: H1-blocking antihistamine. Used to treat allergic symptoms and pruritus. Brand name: Periactin, PMS-Cyproheptadine.

Dexchlor: Brand name for dexchlorpheniramine maleate, available in the US.
Dexbrompheniraimine maleate: H1-blocking antihistamine. Brand name: Drixoral Cold & Allergy, Sustained-Action Tablets.
Dexchlorpheniramine maleate: H1-blocking antihistamine. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses. Used to treat rhinitis, allergic symptoms, contact dermatitis, and pruritus. Brand names: Dexchlor, Poladex T.D., and Polaramine.
Diamine T.D.: Brand name for brompheniramine maleate, available in the US.
Dihydrex: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available as an injection by prescription in the US.
Dilosyn: Brand name for methdilazine HCl, available by prescription in Australia and Canada only.
Dimenhydrinate: This H1-blocking antihistamine is a combination of two drugs, diphenhydramine and 8-chlorotheophylline. Dimenhydrinate is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and motion sickness. Approved by the FDA in 1949. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (HCl): A popular, sedating H1-blocking antihistamine available OTC in pill, capsule, and liquid forms. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses, particularly histamine's effects on the smooth muscle of the bronchial tubes, GI tract, uterus,, and blood vessels. Also suppresses cough reflex by a direct effect on the medulla (part of the brain). Also available as an injectable drug by prescription. Used to treat rhinitis, allergic symptoms, motion sickness, and Parkinson's Disease. Efidac 24: Brand name for extended-release chlorpheniramine maleate.
Epinephrine (Adrenaline): A chemical that narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs, which increases blood pressure and decreases wheezing. Brand names: Adrenalin, Broniten Mist, Bronkaid Mistometer, Primatene® Mist, and Sus-Phrine.
Epinephrine bitartrate: A chemical that narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs, which increases blood pressure and decreases wheezing. Epinephrine is injected to halt and reverse anaphylaxis. Brand names: AsthmaHaler, Broniten Mist, Bronkaid Mist Suspension, Medihaler-Epi, and Primatene® Mist Suspension.
Epinephrine hydrochloride: A medication injected to halt and reverse anaphylaxis. Brand names: Adrenalin Chloride, Epi-Pen, and Sus-Phrine.
EpiPen®: Brand name for an epinephrine auto-injector, which is available by prescription and is used to treat anaphylaxis or severe mast cell attacks. Also available as EpiPen Jr. For more info, see EpiPen.com.
E-Vista: Brand name for hydroxyzine HCl, formerly available by prescription in the US and manufactured by Seatrace Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Important Note: While this medication is no longer available, its name is often confused with that of Evista (raloxifene HCl), which is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, marketed by Eli Lilly for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Famotidine: H2-blocking antihistamine that inhibits the action of histamine at receptor sites of the parietal cells, decreasing gastric acid secretion. Brand names: Pepcid and Pepcidine.
Fexofenadine hydrochloride: A non-sedating H1-blocking antihistamine. Available only by prescription. Brand names: Allegra® and Telfast 120.
Flixotide: Brand name of fluticasone propionate in the form of an inhaler. Manufactured by GlaxoWellcome and available in the United Kingdom. Also available as Flixotide Diskus.
Flonase®: Brand name of fluticasone propionate in the form of a nasal spray. Used to treat nasal allergies. Manufactured in the US by GlaxoSmithKline.
Flovent®: Brand name of fluticasone propionate in the form of an inhaler. Manufactured in the US by GlaxoSmithKline. Available as Flovent Inhalation Aerosol, Flovent Diskus, and Flovent Rotadisk.
Fluticasone propionate: A synthetic corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory) used to treat allergies (Flonase) and asthma (Flovent). Brand names: Flixotide, Flonase and Flovent.
Fynex: Brand name for diphenhydramine HCl, available OTC in the US.

Lomotil: Brand name for a combination of diphenoxylate hydrochloride and atropine sulfate, used to treat acute, nonspecific diarrhea. It is believed to work by increasing smooth muscle tone in the GI tract, inhibiting motility and propulsion, an diminishing secretions. Liquid form contains alcohol.
Loperamide: Used to treat acute, nonspecific diarrhea, acts by inhibiting peristaltic activity and prolonging transit of intestinal contents. Brand name: Imodium.
Loratadine: Non-sedating H1-blocking antihistamine, which is being touted as the "first non-sedating OTC antihistamine." Its chemical structure prevents entry into the central nervous system. Used to treat symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Brand names: Alavert, Children's Dimetapp� ND Non-Drowsy Allergy, Clarinase (in combination with pseudoephedrine sulphate), Claritin.

Seldane: Brand name for terfenadine, no longer available in the US. Originally available in 1985 as the first prescription antihistamine to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis without causing drowsiness (non-sedating). After its approval, the FDA began receiving reports of fatal and serious instances of cardiac arrhythmia and announced in January 1997 that Seldane would be withdrawn from the market.
