While we cannot cover every drug that any one of us may take, we've tried to provide information about the medications (mast cell stabilizers, antihistamines, leukotriene blockers, etc.) that tend to be taken or prescribed for mast cell-related disorders.

- H1-blocking antihistamine, related to cyproheptadine, with anti-serotonin, anticholinergic (drying), and sedative effects. Available by prescription in the US and manufactured by Schering-Plough. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses. Originally approved by the FDA in 1977. Used to treat rhinitis, allergic symptoms, and chronic idiopathic urticaria. - An anti-inflammatory steroid that decreases inflammation, probably by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes. Used as an inhalation to treat steroid-dependent asthma and as a nasal spray to treat allergies. Brand names: Aldecin Inhaler, Beclodisk, Becloforte Inhaler, Beclovent, Beconase AQ Nasal Spray, Vancenase AQ Nasal Spray, and Vanceril.

- Cimetidine
- H2-blocking antihistamine that prevents the release of acid into the stomach. Used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Cimetidine is available as a prescription drug and OTC for the relief of heartburn. Brand name: Tagamet®.
- Clarinase
- Brand name for loratadine combined with pseudoephedrine sulphate, available in the United Kingdom. Also available in double-strength tablets as Clarinase 24-hour Relief.
- Clarinex®
- Brand name for desloratadine, available by prescription and manufactured in the US by Schering Corp..
- Claritin®
- Brand name for loratadine, available OTC and manufactured in the US by Schering-Plough. Also available in Canada. Also available as Claritin Reditabs.
- Clemastine fumarate
- H1-blocking antihistamine. Used to treat rhinitis and allergic symptoms. Brand names: Allerhist-1, Contac 12 Hour Allergy, Tavist.
- Clorfed
- Brand name for extended-release chlorpheniramine maleate and pseudoephedrine HCl tablets, available by prescription in the US. (This is a new brand, introduced in April, 2004.)
- Codimal-A

- Compazine®

- Compoz® Nighttime Sleep Aid

- Comtrex Maximum Strength Caplets
- Brand name for tablets containing acetaminophen 500mg (pain reliever/fever reducer), chlorpheniramine maleate, and pseudoephedrine HCl, available OTC in the US.

- Contac 12 Hour Allergy

- Mast cell stabilizer. Cromolyn sodium inhibits the release of mediators from sensitized mast cell. It acts by inhibiting the release of histamine and leukotrienes from the mast cell. It does not have intrinsic vasoconstrictor, antihistamine, or glucocorticoid activity. Brand names: Gastrocrom, Intal, Nalcrom, and Opticrom.

- Dimenhydrinate
- This H1-blocking antihistamine is a combination of two drugs, diphenhydramine and 8-chlorotheophylline. Dimenhydrinate is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and motion sickness. Approved by the FDA in 1949. - A popular, sedating H1-blocking antihistamine available OTC in pill, capsule, and liquid forms. Prevents, but does not reverse, histamine-mediated responses, particularly histamine's effects on the smooth muscle of the bronchial tubes, GI tract, uterus,, and blood vessels. Also suppresses cough reflex by a direct effect on the medulla (part of the brain). Also available as an injectable drug by prescription. Used to treat rhinitis, allergic symptoms, motion sickness, and Parkinson's Disease. - Epinephrine (Adrenaline)
- A chemical that narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs, which increases blood pressure and decreases wheezing. Brand names: Adrenalin, Broniten Mist, Bronkaid Mistometer, Primatene® Mist, and Sus-Phrine.
- Epinephrine bitartrate
- A chemical that narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs, which increases blood pressure and decreases wheezing. Epinephrine is injected to halt and reverse anaphylaxis. Brand names: AsthmaHaler, Broniten Mist, Bronkaid Mist Suspension, Medihaler-Epi, and Primatene® Mist Suspension.
- Epinephrine hydrochloride
- A medication injected to halt and reverse anaphylaxis. Brand names: Adrenalin Chloride, Epi-Pen, and Sus-Phrine.
- EpiPen®
- Brand name for an epinephrine auto-injector, which is available by prescription and is used to treat anaphylaxis or severe mast cell attacks. Also available as EpiPen Jr. For more info, see EpiPen.com.
- E-Vista
- Brand name for hydroxyzine HCl, formerly available by prescription in the US and manufactured by Seatrace Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Important Note: While this medication is no longer available, its name is often confused with that of Evista (raloxifene HCl), which is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, marketed by Eli Lilly for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. - Flonase®
- Brand name of fluticasone propionate in the form of a nasal spray. Used to treat nasal allergies. Manufactured in the US by GlaxoSmithKline.
- Flovent®
- Brand name of fluticasone propionate in the form of an inhaler. Manufactured in the US by GlaxoSmithKline. Available as Flovent Inhalation Aerosol, Flovent Diskus, and Flovent Rotadisk.
- Fluticasone propionate
- A synthetic corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory) used to treat allergies (Flonase) and asthma (Flovent). Brand names: Flixotide, Flonase and Flovent.

- Loperamide
- Used to treat acute, nonspecific diarrhea, acts by inhibiting peristaltic activity and prolonging transit of intestinal contents. Brand name: Imodium.

- Non-sedating H1-blocking antihistamine, which is being touted as the "first non-sedating OTC antihistamine." Its chemical structure prevents entry into the central nervous system. After its approval, the FDA began receiving reports of fatal and serious instances of cardiac arrhythmia and announced in January 1997 that Seldane would be withdrawn from the market.
